i totally agree with switching different genres and exploring a wider range of books. i can't imagine who i'd be if i only read fantasy books or self-help books or classics. mix it up a little, ya know? some contemporary, some postmodernist, a nice thriller here and a domestic there, chuck in a guide to cleaning up dead bodies and a book about someone who drowns in a river, and you've got yourself a very interesting human being...

"Your brain sometimes isn't your best friend." 100% with you on this. I do think reading a story, even just a page or two, can take you out of the chaotic state our minds so easily fall into. Also for me, taking a nice walk is another great antidote to the afflictions of the mind

When I was in middle school I would occasionally have "book days", where I would read an entire book instead of talking to people/being on my phone during any of my downtime. It was usually something light and thrilling, and I remember it feeling like such a reset!

i adore these ramble-ish kind of videos! they are somehow very comforting, like exchanging ideas or thoughts with a friend.

I am a main non-fiction reader. But when I sometimes read a good fiction book, or a easy non-fiction book. I notice I forget time. It feels like meditation, good meditation. Where you are conscious about doing it. But just forget the time. Like a flow state. And I mainly only get that with fiction. Since non-fiction needs concentration, focus and a constant thinking process. Fiction is the only type of bokes where I, feel into it. Which is cool. I want to read more fiction because of that. But again, main non-fiction reader. It has always been easier for me to read non-fiction. Since the marketing is so on point. Like, if I want to read about the brain, I pick a book with a picture of the brain, 99% of the time the book with a cover picture of a brain, is a book about the brain. It is easier to find a book about a subject I enjoy and want to learn, then finding a good fiction book. (sorry for bad English)

I agree so much! As an economics student, it's my genuine passion, but reading so much of it without reading anything else is draining.

This is so true! After a month of not reading anything (I was experiencing extreme book burnout), I picked up a biography which is something I never do, and I ended up loving it. I tend to read horror and fantasy, so it was nice to switch it up a bit.

for the past few months I've been reading much more diverse books than I used to. I stopped reading only novels and started reading more plays, some poetry, novellas and short stories, an epic poem, and collections of letters, all of them from authors of different backgrounds and different points in history. it offers a much wider view of the world and many more perspectives to add to your own and also demonstrates the breadth of what literature can be and in how many different ways it can be enjoyable, so I am very happy about having ventured into this wider territory.

It's like meditation. You leave your ego and immerse in the story and the characters

I can definetly relate to reading as a way to "snap out" of anything related to ruminating thoughts, mindloops or just stress in general.

Since I start to go to the university I stoped reading things/books that I really love. All the goddamn pdf in my sociology Lic and now on this year I’m beginning again to read more interesting book for me

My problem is that reading induces napping! It was the most frustrating thing while I was doing my Literature degree, and it's bound to continue to be the bane of my life as I go into my Masters in the coming year. When I'm reading for pleasure it doesn't bother me, but when I'm reading course material I've got a deadline to panic about.

Couldnt agree more. For the past years ive been really into self help books, memoirs and all sorts of non fiction. And then theres one day in 2019 i just thought, maybe i should give a fiction a read, it was Gail Honeyman’s Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine. Somehow the days ive been reading the book really took me out of the real life, as in I’m still doing my daily usual routine, working 9-5 etc and all kinds of worries that i have at work doesn’t worry me much as they usually do. In fact i dealt my daily routine with much ease. Idk if that makes sense. But yeah, it’s definitely a good thing.

Uou i really agree.
Im in a really stresssing job, i will get out, but books is what made me survive that stress. Its like my vacations every single day. Even books about tragedies, ironically, for exemple 1984, still taking my stress out.

I find this very true. Reading before sleep really turns off the monkey mind for me. Meditation/mindfulness practice and strenuous exercise are good ones too.
