Sonja shares her grandma's German potato salad recipe. One thing I love about this recipe is the simplicity but don't let that fool you into thinking these potatoes aren't packed with delicious flavor. This traditional recipe is perfect to bring to a family party and will be enjoyed by both adults and kids. I mean come on, who doesn't love bacon grease. RECIPE
Ingredients: (amounts may vary - adjust to taste preference)
5 lb Bag of Potatoes
1 lb Bacon
1:1 Mayonnaise and Sour Cream (About 3/4 a small tub)
Splash of Vinegar
Sprinkle of Sugar
1 Onion
Salt and Pepper to Taste
Optional: Grandma's punch (boxed white wine) to drink while cooking
Recipe:
1. Chop your potatoes to small pieces and add to a pot of water. Add the potatoes as the water is heating up on the stove. Cook until slightly underdone so they don't get too mushy. You don't want them to turn into mash potatoes.
2. Cook the bacon.
3. Cut your onion into small pieces.
4. Once the bacon is done, remove from the grease and add your finely chopped onions to the bacon grease and cook until soft and saturated.
5. Drain your potatoes and add to a bowl.
6. Add your onions to the bowl along with most of the bacon grease. Let sit so the potatoes soak up the grease.
7. For the sauce. Add your sour cream, mayonnaise, vinegar, and sugar to a bowl. This is where you will want to tase the sauce and adjust. You don't want any one specific flavor to overpower the sauce. This may take some experimenting to get it just right.
8. Crumble the bacon over the potatoes.
9. Add the sauce to the potatoes. Mix and serve! This can be eaten hot or cold.
