“All great changes are preceded by chaos.”
~Deepak Chopra
In these times of overwhelming complexity, it may feel as if we are all just leaves caught in a cosmic whirlwind. Trying to navigate this labyrinth seems impossible when so many unresolved issues are beyond our control. Nevertheless, the astrology of October does reveal an underlying rhyme and reason to the apparently chaotic patterns of this politically charged month. The Libra New Moon on October 2 at 11:49 am PDT is a Solar Eclipse, setting the tone for the weeks ahead and emphasizing the need for clear communication in order to establish harmony in all types of relationships. The eclipse is conjunct interactive Mercury, requiring us to participate in the give and take of conversation as we seek solutions to the personal and collective dilemmas that we face. Although we may be tempted to act or speak impulsively as the Sun forms an anxious sesquisquare with restless Uranus on October 4 and Mercury creates a conflictive square with reckless Mars on October 5, it behooves us to listen to the stabilizing trine between resourceful Venus and responsible Saturn that is exact on the 4th. Our energy flows with greater ease on October 8 when Venus trines Mars and Mercury trines Jupiter.
There is plenty of progress as the personal planets (Mercury, Venus, and Mars) are all speeding along, prompting a high-frequency pace to life. However, meaningful change may plod along too slowly or even seem to be totally stalled as opportunistic Jupiter turns retrograde on October 9 and transformational Pluto stations direct on October 11. Frustrations build when expressive Mercury squares Pluto on October 13, triggering power struggles at home or at work. Our thoughts can turn obsessive when Mercury sinks into the murky waters of secretive Scorpio the same day. Although we may have moments of heightened confidence when the willful Sun trines grandiose Jupiter on the 13th, the Sun’s dynamic square to Mars on the 14th will likely stir up a round of discord. Again, we must be careful not to lose our temper, for unrestrained anger will only create more drama and stress. However, suppression isn’t a healthy solution, either. Instead of allowing ourselves to be swept up in an idealistic fantasy, searching for reliable facts is the most sensible tactic. Building bridges instead of walls enables us to find common ground where once there was none.
The Aries Full Moon on October 17 at 4:26 am PDT presents another dance with temptation as its square to combative Mars can lead us into an unnecessary squabble that may be much to do about nothing. Choosing our battles wisely is the mature approach, but it’s also important that we don’t slip into denial. Consciously acknowledging our feelings of annoyance, anger, or rage may be appropriate, but it’s not necessary to act on every subjective response to external circumstances.
Sailing through the stormy seas of uncertainty becomes trickier during the second half of the month as a series of annoying quincunxes roll in from the cosmos like sets of unpredictable waves. It may feel as if there are no effective strategies at our disposal when the Sun forms ill-adjusted quincunxes to unstable Uranus and foggy Neptune on October 18 and 20, respectively. Complications could become temporarily unmanageable when the Sun squares Pluto and then enters volatile Scorpio on the 22nd. Another round of irritating quincunxes and anxiety-producing sesquisquares interrupt our peace and quiet on October 26-29.
Unfortunately, our frustration might have us grasping for unrealistic exit strategies or agreeing to far-fetched plans. Our best chances for successfully navigating our way through the tangled twists and turns of these times is to stay focused on seeing things from a wider perspective. Adaptability can be our most useful superpower. Practicing flexibility as life throws us curveball after curveball allows us to land on our feet in a better position. Using the current chaos to open our minds to all the potentialities is more helpful than believing we already have all the answers. Philosopher Alan Watts wrote, “The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance.”
