We have had a busy week breaking down some of the rides from the Grand Prix dressage competition at Ermelo during with World Young Horse Dressage Championships.

The last videos features Katherine Bateson and Haute Couture alongside Anouk Nordman and Zeronica in the Grand Prix. Both horses get a little bit wild during the test and the end result is different for both parties.

Anouk Nordman retired after the bell was rung and it was reported as retired rather than an elimination.

Katherine Bateson managed to tactfully ride Haute Couture to a complete Grand Prix dressage test.

I LOVE this. I love when horses say NO. This is poor clean diaster riding. The best sign of that the sport need so much a new way of being done

It always fascinates me how some riders think that when a horse is in distress they just need to add more pressure.. A crash course on logical thinking might be a nice requirement for Grand Prix riders.

Dressage horses are gorgeous when they protest. 😍 You don't see such attractive defiance in other disciplines.

I just watched a video, relatively recently uploaded, of Henri Ruoste and Kontestro performing their freestyle in 2022 at CD15* Al Sheqab - Doha (I think I got that right). It was quite enjoyable to watch a ride where the rider's hands are flexible, the horse's mouth is closed, and the movements feel so much freer than what I have seen of late. At no time did the horse look uncomfortable or stressed! The rider was quiet, no yanking or pulling. They gave the impression this horse could have done this test with a plain snaffle. So nice to see, after witnessing so many overbent, tight horses longing to escape heavy hands! Just thought I would mention it for anyone who hasn't seen it.

Rhythm, regularity and relaxation. The basics.

I think this is a great channel showing when horse and rider are not in harmony. But what I would like to see and I know there are limitations to filming, is what the horse and rider were like from stable to warm up area then the test. Often you know as a rider there's something a little off with your horse but you think it will be ok. Or you are feeling more anxious and a bit tired which the horse picks up. To me it is what the rider does in test when things go wrong that's important.

It's the disease of using pressure to produce big movements, vs a relaxed horse in honest collection.

Wtf is the first rider doing is ger hands? I can't even tell is she's trying to give cues or if she strongly lacks of balance. 😮

These horses, many of them, are mentally abused.

Ride these horses without the severe bits and bridles and spurs and see what happens

I recognize spicy peppers when I see them. The first horse was HOT HOT HOT. Does not surprise me she bowed out.
He was super strong and ignoring the bit, but she didn't want to use curb. Looks like a bunch of quick corrections and adjustments and then horse said nope.
She would not have gotten him to Piaffe, OR it would have been the prettiest piaffe ever. My vote is exploding though. I rode my mare when she was like this a while back. My sympathies to spicy horses.

Dressage looks so coercive and unnatural. I wish all of the dressage horses would put their hoof down and say "no more of this ridiculousness."

Hard hands and riders that are all about themselves. Do peoples know we love the horses more than the riders? Showcase a horse, don't try to tame it. A good rider knows a horse could do it without them.
