The big tune in the Rienzi overture sounds like Elgar after a brief holiday in Munich. I always think. Or, possibly Cologne.

Hey Dave, thanks for mentioning this recording. I've seen it before, but passed it over. However, today I streamed it and loved it! Amazing sound! The notes indicate the recording was made in the Lukaskirche, which is a glorious venue and site of many of the famous Dresden recordings. The orchestra and conductor really go for the jugular at the end of the Tannhäuser overture! This one is a keeper.

His Tannhauser is absolutely magnificent! I am happy to have it on a vinyl by the Eterna label. Sounds really great!

Thanks, Dave. Buying this one straight away! I adore Rienzi. Just listened to the Paray/Detroit version last night. Always puts me in a good mood. Always nice to have another excellent Wagner disc.

your comments on taste and Dresden trombone make me wish Wakasugi conducted Berlioz.

Excited to hear this right away. I’m returning to Bayreuth this year for Parsifal and the Ring cycle. Always happy to hear Wagner played as well as you describe.

I got this disc it’s fantastic I just wish there was more of it as it’s just under an hour.

I need to hear this.
About five years back, I bought a CD of Wakasugi conducting Wagner's symphonies with Tokyo Met. Maybe I'm off on this but I love the album.
It's on Denon and was in a $1 bin.

I heard Wakasugi conduct the Boston Symphony at Tanglewood in 1981 or 1982, including a truly superb Mahler 1st. I did not know he died in 2009.

Wow Dave, a Rienzi overture you actually enjoy! This i'm definitely going to have to check out. I had a cheap recording years ago where the tempo was much brisker than usual (I think from memory about 8 and a half minutes instead of the usual 10 plus) and it meant the central wind section managed to sound light hearted instead of the usual pomposity and i thought really worked..

about the cd concerning the overtures and preludes of wagner, i often listen to the cd of guiseppe sinopoli and the stattkapelle of dresden on dgg .... this disc had deserved a 10 out of 10 for the sound recording .. ...and my god what an interpretation of sinopoli....! you would think you were on the floor at the front. the playing of the orchestra is wonderful, lively, and sinopoli does not fall into the trap of grandiloquence .... I will listen to the disc that you are but it, is especially for

Thanks for the recommendation, I was looking to add some Wagner to my library. I have the Paavo Jarvi album with NHK Symphony Orchestra Tokyo, but that was it. Singing keeps me away from most Wagner albums: I just never cared for any Classical vocals, with a single exception: Saint-Saëns' Danse Macabre.

Hello
I'm new to your channel and pretty much overwhelmed by content and the amount of information that's here.
I have a question how are you listen to all of this music?(headphones, speakers etc) Did you made a video about that?
Thank you very much

You mentioned Takemitsu in passing. Shouldn't we have him on our list of "If I could only choose one"?

"Demented Rossini without a sense of humor".
Must be the awful quarters of an hour that Rossini spoke about.
