In this trademark phrasing jazz drum lesson, I demonstrate some classic trademark phrases of Philly Joe Jones, one of the founding fathers of jazz drumming. These ideas can be applied to jazz drum soloing and jazz time playing. They can also be worked over in many different ways, so have fun!

Great presentation. Thank you for not spending time talking to us and giving unnecessary exposition. Let the music do the talking. Very refreshing. Thanks

Ned in España here to say how much I love the videos and the logical well laid out easy to grasp..etc way that you demonstrate these patterns. For both hands too ! I appreciate that because I´m a southpaw. Just as an aside for a time I got lazy about my rudiments, shame shame, then I got into them, Stick Control, Wilcoxson, etc and it amazes me how much that it improves learning new patterns and concepts. Your videos are always helpful and thanks for making them.

Yeah Quincy!! Could you make an episode on Billy Higgins' grip on the ride cymbal? I think it uses the stick control which gives it the binary feel

Awesome! Love everything about this.

Classical jazz drumming preserved, destined for immortality.

God, how I wish I could see this kind of stuff when I was learning.

Figuring stuff out by ear was amazing, but just to think how much more we could have crammed into our tiny drummer brainz and then pushed the envelope before the extinction of the instrument on a mainstream fashion.

(Yeah look at spotifys top 100 and hardly one of them features a real kit being played by a real drummer!)
