Sharks have rather bad eyesight, but really good smelling. They bump they noses and maybe try to nibble on something if they can't tell what the thing in front of them is, in order to determine "is it friendly, hostile, food or not". They also don't tend to eat what they do not know. So if you establish boundaries early and remain calm and gentle in it's presence, then it will remember you as a positive presence. (similar to dentist fishes)
I personally like lemon sharks a lot, they are like ocean puppies.

I used to swim with black tipped reef sharks in the Bahamas. It was lovely to watch their "polite feeding" and to see divers remove hooks to help the sharks.
