Three extended ISO tests in vlog to help expose your image

Someone had a great question about the Panasonic S5; Is the Extended ISO was worth it? This video explores a series of ISO tests in vlog to help answer that question. Is the lower ISO of 320 less noisy than the lower setting of dual native ISO at 640?

Join me and discover some fun discussion about exposure and ISO and let me know what you think in the comments.

Were there any surprises? Any thoughts of how the test could be done better?

Hope this is helpful in answering some questions about your Panasonic S5 as you look under the hood seeing how the ISO (eye-so) is affected in three different tests.

Each test cycles through all extended ISO settings in 1/3 stops in vlog:
Test one, exposing to 0 on the luminance spot meter to middle gray.
Test two, exposing to 0 on the light meter.
Test three, exposing to +1 on the light meter.

All of the black squares on the color chart are zoomed in 10x (1000%) for better clarity of the ISO results. Here’s hoping that the YouTube compression doesn’t ruin this test. The video was uploaded at 4k.

Brilliant! I was surprised at how much noise variation there was. Wasn't what I was expecting.

Thanks for this test Charles!
What I would really like to see is a comparison between Internal 10 bit 422 recording VS ProRes HQ VS BRAW Q0 (including skintones and colorcheckers, under natural light). Strangely, there’s not much comparison out there, especially comparing ProRes HQ. I found a few BRAW examples with the S5, but they aren’t very good, and they’re not even comparing it to the internal codec, so it’s not really helpful. You would the first one to truly demonstrate the difference in between all 3 options. They’re all about BRAW, but ProRes HQ is still a very interesting option since it allows some Noise Reduction and e-stabilization/Boost IS to be used (plus you get a higher bitrate, All-Intra frames and smoother playback). Also, i’m curious to know if you HAVE to set the HDMI output to 10 bit 422 on the S5, or if you can keep it at 12 bit RAW and still record in ProRes HQ on the Video Assist (so it completely bypasses any sort of in-camera processing). If you could made these tests and share the original files with us, it would be GREAT Charles! 🤞🏻🙏🏻🤞🏻 Thank you!

So far I think the noise on the Lumix S cameras looks really nice, so I sort of wanna go for more noise rather than less. What I'd like to see is a test showing how much - if at all - the low range of the extended ISO crushes the shadow detail.
