All new to the stock market investees should get their feet wet by buying index funds, like a s&p 500 fund etc. as you learn the animal stock market. Slow and steady, and hold on. Don't panic sell when it gets ugly, it will come back and more. As youlearn the market then you can start to dabble in dividend stocks. Don't chase the high dividend amount, go with a well established company that isn't going to fold any time soon like coke, Ibm etc
