Le Chat Noir

Le Chat Noir is a now defunct famous Parisian cabaret in Montmartre.

Many of us have keychains that we carry on our bags or keys. Sometimes there are interesting specimens reflecting the history of cities. For example, this keychain with the image of a black cat.
“The Black Cat” (French: Le Chat Noir) is a now defunct famous Parisian cabaret in Montmartre. It was opened on November 18, 1881. After the death of the founder (1897) it existed for a couple more years, then it was sold and changed its name.
The cabaret was opened by the artist Rodolphe Salis on November 18, 1881 and closed in 1897, much to the disappointment of Pablo Picasso and other visitors to the city who arrived in Paris for the 1900 Universal Exhibition. In other countries, cabarets imitating the Black Cat were opened, for example, Stray Dog in St. Petersburg or Four Cats in Barcelona. There is also a cafe “Black Cat” in the city of Corfu (Greece) and an unremarkable restaurant “At the Black Cat” (Au Chat Noir) in the center of Brussels.
