The Phantom of the Opera is a 1925 American silent horror film adaptation of Gaston Leroux's 1910 novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra, directed by Rupert Julian and starring Lon Chaney in the title role of the deformed Phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House, causing murder and mayhem in an attempt to make the woman he loves a star. The film remains most famous for Chaney's ghastly, self-devised make-up, which was kept a studio secret until the film's premiere. The film was released on November 15, 1925.

The picture also features Mary Philbin, Norman Kerry, Arthur Edmund Carewe, Gibson Gowland, John St. Polis and Snitz Edwards.

Wow. I love Lon Chaney's phantom/erik so much. I think even by today's standards his deformity is quite frightening.

Too bad we didn't have what really mattered: Erik's redemption. The alternative ending is much better than this garbage, violent one we have. Btw, rest in peace Chaney and Leroux ❤️

Love this! Keep on colorizing, dudes! according to the logic of the anti-colorists, making this art more accessible violates the art. I guess they think de-colorizing fine art is ok (in art books), that’s been done for decades, and nobody squeals foul! Colorize Citizen Kane! Colorize Chaplin’s City Lights and Modern Times! Young people will watch them and love them!

Of course, I love the musical but I think versions like these of the Phantom of the Opera are just underrated

This is the best colour version that should have been made and released, if the movie had dialogue, this movie would have been the best version ever made, WOW 100% perfect and in High Definition and in 1080p resolution and in High Quality Digital Stereo. This prooves that any movie can be fully restored and remastered between 1923 to 2023, everything is possible if you put your mind into it and with the money too match I would love this on DVD, Blu-Ray or even a Memory Stick I give this video work 100% plus ❤❤❤❤❤❤🎥🎬👍I want this copy version 😊😊😊😊

The immortal Thousand Faces Lon Chaney.

There needs to be a French language adaptation of the phantom of the opera and with Erik looking like this! Because Chaney's Erik is legendary for a reason and is more true to the novel!

I have been hoping for this to be in color one day, and here it is.
Thank you so much!😊🌟

Apparently, the “full movie” that we all see is a splice of the 1925 original, the 1929 re-edit, and the 1935 voice dub (in which the audio is lost, ) which is a result of a combination of simple human errors and chunks of the different versions being lost entirely

AVGN did a whole video about this but that opening scene with the lantern man perplexes me. I want to believe that it's taken from the sound version but as he points out, it's in an original release of the movie. He's just standing there awkwardly for such a long time. It doesn't detract from the rest of the movie, it's still brilliant, but it's odd nonetheless.

I have a question.
I could have sworn this was from 1925 and not 1929. Which one is it?

I'm pretty sure this isn't the 1925 version. It runs at roughly an hour and forty five minutes, not 91.

Poor Mary Philbin wasn't the greatest actress of the '20s but she looked wonderful
