Thing is, Sody's right. Soft drink machines directly mix freshly carbonated water (produced inside the machine) with syrups made from all the flavors and other ingredients of whatever drink they are dispensing. Canned/bottled soda, on the other hand, is premixed, includes preservatives to keep the ingredients fresh, and is kept carbonated by pressurization until the can/bottle is opened. So it's not only the proportions of the flavor to the water, but even the amount of carbonation in the water that is different between the stuff from a vending machine and the stuff from a drink dispenser. So yes, it DOES hit different.

The reason that fountain drinks taste better is that the syrup is added there in the restaurant so the restaurant can control how much syrup to add to make the flavor stronger or weaker. They normally make it stronger than the factories because people will come back for more if they like it enough. They can also make it more watered down if they are low on funds or syrup, making it last longer, but making it seem like the machine is acting up.
