Philosophers have long thought that memory is the key to maintaining a continuous self--to feeling like the same person from one day to the next. But philosopher Jesse Prinz is turning that idea on its head. At the 2016 World Science Festival, he discussed his work in the new field of experimental psychology and his revelation that the true key to maintaining a self is morality.

I kept wondering if he was going to summarize his argument with a description of why his hair was pink during a professional forum, with other professionals and theorists... but he said nothing, allowing me to make my own conclusions. In other words, instead of listening to his discussion, I kept focusing on his pink head...

Philosophy is not a science why is it being treated like one? I like philosophy don't get me wrong, but it is it's own thing.

Is 'maintaining a self' the assumed goal here? Shouldn't we evolve ourselves? If we are not actually the same person day to day (as has been admitted), then does not putting undue stock in the illusion of such hold us back? Of course our moral programming will be central to our perceived character -- it is referenced (consciously or not) when undertaking a great range of thoughts and actions. Hardly a revelation.
