First Winter at My Old Cabin in the Mountains

Well, the firewood almost ran out. I am struggling to keep up with what is needed to heat the cabin.

This week I continued splitting up the huge log rounds from the new stash, strained my herbal elixir from the off-grid cabin, worked on my small business in the a-frame cabin, spent time exploring the land and swam in the freezing river water.

Also, Kyle has returned well before this video went live, as shown and mentioned at the end.

Glad you got ash! My dad bricked up our fireplace and put in a wood-burning little workhorse the first year in the '32 Cape Cod he moved us into in '75. I grew up on Long Island & he partnered with a small family wood cutting business after working shifts on the LIRR so there was no shortage of wood for us.
While our neighbors usually had to have the oil man come at least three times throughout the fall and winter months, we only called him once a year.☺️

I still remember the one time that the oil truck was parked across the street from us for about a week because he thought that we were buying it from the other guy who was selling it a little bit cheaper. If we were, we would have breached the contract and he could have sued us. I still remember his jaw dropping when Dad told him to come around to the back and see why we don't call him so much. He just wished us a happy day and went on his way 🤣

I helped dad rotate the wood on three out of four of the sides of the backyard throughout the warmer months.
It really makes you appreciate basics. Things have changed, we've relocated 8 states south, and we are now 53 years old and looking to downsize. Our land is being overtaken by 'investors' and our acreage is one of the few properties left where the deer and wildlife still have some sort of a refuge.
Just recently, yet another car wash (to add to the three already within 500 feet of each other) popped up, and the second coffee shop that is plopped onto an acre & half, already has a For lease sign in the window. They didn't last one month. Most of the deer come to feast on my muscadines from that area. I remember walking by it on my treks and how the area used to be so lush with berries and foliage. Now it's basically one big mud pit because the erosion is so bad 😞

But we'll be looking to move toward the N. Georgia mountains as we retire soon. Hopefully where people will continue to appreciate undisturbed land.
I appreciate that I don't see a romanticization of your videos. Both of you are just trying to make a living, appreciating the land, and enjoying life with friends.
Great job!

Kudos to you for keeping up with the Winter needs of your home. I want to give you a shout out about one of your products. In the Winter I have problems with my heals cracking. I have a tin of your The Remedy Salve. It’s working wonders on my feet. Thank you! Great video!

For your labels just order round label sheets. Follow the instructions to print like a regular address label. You can buy the natural looking paper labels too.

It is a good thing about the ash trees . To my knowledge it does not need to be seasoned before burning. I was born and raised in PA.

Ally - when splitting rounds of wood bolt down car tyre to the chopping block, place your round inside, so when you then split the round it all stays within the tyre so you don’t have keep stopping to pick up the split logs off the ground. Saves time and your back. Happy splitting from Rutland, England.

Less than 2 minutes in and I FELT this! First time having a wood stove as main heat source off-grid and my husband and I went through the same thing. Cut SO MUCH wood and thought we would be good for the winter...then a snowstorm hit that put the temps down to 11 degrees and we were stuck up here for 8 days and we went through that wood like paper. It absolutely DOES make a difference which wood you use, too. Some burn so fast while others will burn more slow & steady. Going to watch the rest of the episode but wanted you to know that I think you are a BADASS and thank you for INSPIRING the masses. Living off-grid s NOT EASY even if it may look "fun", and it is, bit it is also HARD WORK!
