Donald Trump just told us that he's going to destroy Social Security in order to privatize it. It's like the old, you know, the old Vietnamese line: "We had to destroy that village to save it." Well, now we've got to destroy Social Security to save it.
During the State of the Union address, he talked about how many people over 100 years old are getting benefits, how many over 200, how many over 300. These are all lies or wild exaggerations, but the point was to say—just like they do with voting, by the way—"Oh, there's voter fraud out there, so let's make it harder to vote." Now it's, "Oh, there's Social Security fraud out there, so let's make it harder for people to get Social Security."
This is an old strategy that Republicans have used forever. This is just the first time they've had the guts to actually do it right out in front of the public. I mean, we've seen these "death by a thousand paper cuts" efforts ever since the Reagan administration.
The staffing at the Social Security Administration—on a staff-per-payee basis, a staff-per-budget basis, or even in absolute numbers—is lower now than it has been in 50 years. Every time there's a Republican in the White House and their budget gets passed, it includes cuts to Social Security Administration staffing.
So far, Social Security has been able to sort of keep up, although it now takes an average of 183 days to process a Social Security disability claim. They're saying that soon, it's going to be between two and four years.
And here's how bad it is. Keep in mind: Leland Dudek, the guy in charge of Social Security, was just a low-level dweeb in the agency. He fed some information to Elon Musk and his people about where he thought fraud or waste might be found. It was probably about those 200- and 300-year-old people who don’t exist. These were programming errors, nothing to do with fraud, waste, or abuse.
But Dudek passed the information along to Elon Musk, and they used it to attack Social Security. So they made him the director of the entire agency. He was a low-level employee, and now he’s running the place.
What’s he doing? He just laid off a bunch of employees—12% of the 57,000 workers at Social Security.
And what’s the result? This is from The Washington Post, published last night:
“The Social Security Administration website crashed four times in 10 days this month, blocking millions of retirees...”
I would add, we’re only 25 days into the month.
“...blocking millions of retirees and disabled Americans from logging into their online accounts because the servers were overloaded. Field office managers have resorted to answering phones at the front desk as receptionists because so many employees have been pushed out. The agency no longer has a system to monitor customer experience because that office was eliminated as part of the cost-cutting efforts led by Elon Musk. The agency is engulfed in crisis, according to internal documents and more than two dozen current and former agency employees and officials.”
