Many people have had problems troubleshooting their 1960s era Ford ignition systems. This video hopefully will provide an understanding how a points and condenser ignition system works.

Be sure to use the identification of the connections on your starter relay as they may be in different positions from the examples shown. I have added a warning overlay at the beginning that will describe several types of starter relays.

This is an excellent video...I had this exact problem...the prior owner had accidently cut the pink wire and then I purchased the car and had the wonderful experience of having to repair it...what made it difficult was that the prior owner had inserted a ceramic resister thinking he did not have a need for the resister wire anymore...! The greatest challenge here was that there was a pink that "morphed" into a brown making it difficult to find...! but thank you very much for otherwise explaining the problem ...!

Your a life saver I’m having trouble on a 1972 ford f100 v8 and know you solved my problem I can get it started by grabbing the starter cable and directly connecting it to the battery but every time I try and start it inside with the key nothing happens thanks again god bless

Hello Richard. The battery on my F150 4.9 Cid 300, the battery gets too hot and is stalling, I have to wait for it to cool down and it will start again. I wonder if I can get a bigger Starter Relay, one built for an F350 may not overheat the battery. Thank you.
