When my Xbox 360 got the red ring of death, I called the boys to come over and salute to our fallen soldier.

It wasn't the led free solder causing the issue, because the CPU used the same solder but rarely ever failed

The cause of the problem was thermal fatigue as the GPU operating temperature was around 90°c in the launch consoles

So here’s a cool reason that I got from the Xbox documentary about why the red ring of death happened: Apparently people kept turning their console on and off, which overtime broke something, dang😬

It came up with either 1 ring, 2 rings 3 rings or 4 rings, 4 rings represented a serious hardware failure which means your xbox is fuc*** or you left a cable unplugged, also, this will not display a code on screen to help you fix it. 3 rings represented a general hardware failure, which could be fixed and will give you a code on screen to fix it. Two rings on the left meant your xbox 360 was overheating, you must give it ventilation and power it off for a few hours to let it cool down, one ring meant you had a hardware failure, which will display a code on screen to help you fix the Xbox.

For God's sake, it's not "lead-free solder"! Most of them were caused by internal GPU failure; you can see it IN the Xbox Documentry. The reason is because TSMC screwed up the low-K and underfill materials on the 90nm and early 80nm GPUs.

Later in 2007, GPUs made in Korea did fix the low-K thing, but they still had low tg underfill, causing above average failure rates still. They fixed the underfill issue as well, starting in Q2 2008.

This video is incorrect. What actually happened, as Microsoft stated directly in their documentary, was that the solder bumps that adhere the dye to the substrate (basically what holds the chip together) was supported with bad materials that were not meant to see the routine 70-80 degrees celsius that the Xbox 360 GPU operates at, which breaks the bumps and therefore the GPU. The proper fix for this issue is to replace the chip on the board, though at this point it would just make more sense to buy a new console.
