i did the math. this is a rough estimate due to decimals so i may be a day or so off but very near the exact amount. blockbuster charged $1 for every day late for the first 10 days then charged $5 for every day after. peter owned $32, 419. take the first $10 away because those fees are 1-1 with number of days. divide 32, 409 by $5 daily rate to get the total number of days which is 6481.8 days. divide by 365 to get 17.7 years. convert the 0.7 to months to get 8.4 months. and lastly convert 0.4 to days and you have 12 days, but dont forget to re-add the original 10 days you took off. that means peter was approximately 17 years, 8 months, and 22 days late with the ladyhawke vhs.

I guess Blockbuster had to reverse that “No more Late Fees” thing after filing for bankruptcy. (And getting sued for false advertising)

The late fee is more the total budget of Ladyhawke

Just an FYI, I used to work at Blockbuster and Peter would have been sent to a collection agency long before the fee got that high and would have gotten several notifications.

"We kinda 'blew up' our whole company for them"
Does he mean literally or metaphority?

So Peter is the reason Blockbuster went bankrupt....

0:42 Actually, it was when Blockbuster introduced the "No more late fees" policy that their company tanked. According to the founder, ~ 2/3 of the company's profits came from late fees.

While it is true that the founder of Netflix started it because of a Blockbuster late fee, the company, in its death throes, abolished late fees.

Didn’t blockbuster get rid of late fees as a last ditch effort to save the company?

The blockbuster near me growing up was sued along with a handful of other franchises as they would purposely wait until after the return time in the “drop off” bin so when they were scanned back in the late fee would automatically be added.

Blockbuster frankly got what they deserved.

As someone who has grown up with going to video stores like Blockbuster back in the 90s and 2000s, this is why I'm not really all that nostalgic for them like so many other people seem to be nowadays, at least streaming services lets me watch whatever I want, whenever I want and even wherever I want without any of those pesky late fees to worry about, hell I'll even pay to rent a movie here on YouTube for three days if i have to, I'll gladly take that convenience over all the bullshit that we had to put up with from video stores back in the day!

I wonder if Family Guy will do a Barnes and Nobles and Borders episode in where Brian, Chris, Meg and Stewie travel around the country to find any remaining Borders after they shut down in 2011, but they end up arriving at a Barnes and Nobles instead.

$32K late fee for a movie is really excessive. When did Peter rent that movie?
