The Shape of LEGO Star Wars before 1999?

What was LEGO Star Wars like before 1999? While, in 1998, LEGO Star Wars wasn't even a conceptualized idea. LEGO and Star Wars fans had to find a way to capture their love for the products, building their own Millennium Falcons, X-Wings, Tie Fighters, and many more Star Wars ships and vehicles to bring the idea to life. Fans had to create their own MOCs and creations before LEGO started conversations with LucasFilm about acquiring a license.

Unfortunately, this was the reality for many LEGO and Star Wars fans before 1999, and in today's video, I wanted to capture all of that. Diving into old LEGO Star Wars MOCs, fan creations, and how LEGO acquired the Star Wars licensing.

The MOCs from Maestro S.Fujita were first made the summer I was born. I loved seeing them on the computer as a kid.

Lego Star Wars was a big part of my childhood.

Yeah, we used to have to do this in the 80s. Used to make all kinds of stuff. From Star Wars to Star Trek to The Last Starfighter.

There’s so many fun and creative part usages in these MOCs, such as…

Firefighter helmets for Rebel troopers helmets
Forestmen hats for Imperial Officers
Vader made from a black knight’s helmet and a Blacktron torso
Peasant hoods for the Jawas
And Fabuland animal figures for various aliens.

This guy was very talented and I hope he’s doing well now.

I remember watching a pre 1999 lego star wars stopmotion movie on Youtube probably 18 or so years ago.

i remember as a kid I had very few lego sets and would often have to make my own star wars minifigures and scenes these pre 99 mocks give me that same feeling of trying to capture the impossible with what you have

This reminds me of when I made the original Star Wars trilogy in low budget Lego. It was a mix of official sets and sets I had to custom make because I did not have the official sets or minifigures.

Great video. Some of the MOCs from back then looked really good. I especially like 3PO and R2-D2 at 3:08. But somehow it also makes me feel a little nostalgic and sad.

I've loved LEGO Star Wars for years now and I have never heard of or thought of this topic. It certainly brings much curiosity, appreciate this video.

This brought me back to when I was younger and growing up in the 90’s seeing those recreations of the Star Wars trilogy in Lego way before Lego Star Wars was is what inspired to make my own mocs, continuing my adoration of the Lego brand. I’m still a big fan of both to this very day. 😃

I remember my dad showing me a photo of him building a small Lego at at in 1980 right after the movies came out when at my grandparents

my imagination had to do a lot of the heavy lifting back in the day when trying to build MOCs from the OT and games like dark forces 2: jedi knight. the best thing was to finally get actual stormtroopers so i didnt have to use race car drivers, lol (like at 4:34)

while i will say the content of the video is original at a glance, you pretty blatantly plagiarized the title and thumbnail of BrickFleet’s video on the same topic from 2 years ago. yes, you passingly acknowledge it and show the thumbnail at the end of the video, but it’s pretty common youtube etiquette to direct people to the videos that inspired them to make their own take on a topic.

Con la poca variedad de piezas y lo primitivo del sistema lego en esa época es increíble ver esas construcciones, realmente eran ideas creativas

What a creative topic, and these are easily the oldest MOCs I've ever seen! As odd as it sounds, I never really thought of people making MOCs back then - of course they did, but I only ever hear of vintage themes and sets. It's both endearing and annoying how low quality the images are (for some reason the crease on the one at 3:15 made me smile). It's all impressive though, and some genuinely look great still.
