Wow! Good ‘ole Skellytown grade school. As the school song said, “Thru the years of Skelly grade school, we’ll remember you…” it was a happening and hopping school when I was there. I’m a proud Skellytown School 8th grad of 1973. Good athletic teams w/ lots of wins on the FB field, BB court, and track field. We had Good town participation, received a quality education with GREAT TEACHERS! Again let me say GREAT TEACHERS & ADMINISTRATORS! I’ll never forget my years at good ‘ole Skellytown grade school. It helped prepare me for WDHS, a B.S. at Texas Tech, & a Masters & Doctorate from Baptist Seminaries. And Skellytown Elementary laid the foundation… Thanks!!

Thanks for this. My mom and Uncle grew up in Skellytown and went to this school, and my grandmother still lives there! Growing up I would often come stay with my grandparents in the summer, and my cousins and I would come play basketball in the auditorium/gym (their mom, my aunt, worked in the admin office).

When this school was closed down, it was over for the town as a whole. If it were not for Chevron/Phillips plants in Borger, TX the town might be totally done. There are still lots of really nice people that live here. I spent 8 years going to school here and then 4 in White Deer as a bus student and then 2 advanced degrees. All thanks to my start at Skellytown Elementary. I walked that stage as a grad of the 8th Grade in 1976. Learned to be tough in that locker room and gym as a 5th grader among 8th graders. Great memories. Thanks for the video!

I went to school there 1st-8th grade. In the late 60’s and early 70’s country and western stars would travel by bus to little towns to do concerts for town fund raisers. That little gym and stage CW stars like Loretta Lynn, Ernest Tubb, Nat Stuckey, The Wilbur Brothers, and others have performed. I went to everyone one of them!!!! The money raised from those concerts helped build/fund The Skellytown Volunteer Fire Department. One of my many great memories of that school and town. Some of my family still lives there.

That's a big building to just leave empty for so long. It's a shame that they don't fix it up and use it. At least they maintain the grounds. Good tour.

Thank you for the video of the school. It brings back a lot of memories. I graduated from this school in the spring of 1960. Those two classrooms at the top of that short staircase were Grade 1 when I went there. Out those two doors by those rooms was a breezeway to another building. It wasn't in your video, so perhaps that building no longer exists. That was the band room for grades 4-8. I found it interesting that the 'new' gymnasium is in worse shape than the original. There were some really good teachers there when I attended. Ms Ballard, Pemberton, Evans (Homeroom, English). I learned everything that I needed to know about English for the rest of my school career from her. She later transferred to teach English at White Deer High. Her husband taught science and history. My interest in science continued and I eventually became an Applied Physics engineer.

I attended from kindergarten to seventh grade when they closed the school and starting bussing us to white deer. Crazy to see it again.

My great uncle is Tommy Thornburgh. I think the new gym was named after him. So sad to see it in horrible shape.

Looks like that would have been a fun school to go to. I would have loved to have done my school years in a school like this:-) In a town that small, school and school activities is all there would be to do. I bet the town shut down during the Friday night football games :-)
