Fantastic review. Also about the crafting grid, that is going to possibly be removed in the future for a more immersive crafting experience according to the devlog, along with new mechanics such as woodworking and cloth weaving but it is probably coming in the far future.

This game is (shockingly) based on a minecraft mod called TerraFirmaCraft. The tools in crafting recipe is a staple of modded minecraft, not a technical limitation.

Great video game I put 120 in my first world 3 years ago and didn’t even get to steel and the next updates gonna add a new boat built in a new way and a new story dungeon thingy and some new enemies and some other things from what they have shown

Well done video. For those thinking of purchasing, know that the game not only allows extensive modding but has the full suite of options to customize your game. From creative to hardcore, flat planes to crazy random nonsense.

So far, I've met two people who absolutely hated this game, and everyone else falls instantly in love. I'm one of the latter. It's a stunningly beautiful game, and obviously a labor of love. I'd watch someone's day-one tutorial before starting out, but it's easy enough to get the basics, and has an incredible amount more you can learn as you go. The process of getting and keeping food, for instance, is simple to figure out, but over time you learn a ton of ways to make each step better.

You seem like the kind of person who should look up the "no crafting" mods they're doing for VS, which has you do things like immersively create firewood with no crafting grid!

I’ve recently gotten into Vintage Story (through a friend) and I have to say you’ve covered pretty much all the basics!
I’d like to add though: hunting is also a pretty huge mechanic. You really need to weigh the risks and rewards of going out to find meat, and you really need to plan ahead if you want to *raise* meat. Wild animals *will* fight back, and when raising your own livestock you have to consider the time, food, space and storage needed for all of that. There really is so much to do in VS that really immerses the player in this beautiful world and I love it to death. I’m super excited for the next update as well, which is going to be including not only custom boat builds, but mounts! (I also suspect some animals are getting revamped and prettied up, which is delightful imho)

There’s also an additional function when it comes to building and that would be the chiselling. Being able to edit the voxels of nearly any cubic block is absolutely incredible for those of us who *really* enjoy building and decorating.

And the last thing I’d say that gives this game a wonderful selling point: the whole thing is built with modding in mind. Nearly anyone can sit down and mod the game with little no prior knowledge and it’s so so cool

I've played this game for about half a year now, introduced to it by friend. I love it. It's such a fantastic game, and I find that I prefer it over Minecraft.

Found it boring and overly tedious. Most of the class options are useless. The severe penalties don't justify playing them outside large groups of players.

I disagree heavily with the autodetect idea for crafting, that would be highly irritating for those who want to preserve certain items in their inventories as opposed to using the already damaged or near broken ones.
Also, regarding modding, the game has better modding functionality around it than minecraft as the game itself is a mod for the engine. A custom made one by the devs, at that. Additionally, modding is super simple, in which you can plug and play mods. There is also a one click install button shoots the install right into your game. ALSO, joining modded servers is super simple. The game will autodownload whatever modifications the server has put on it, upon joining. Figured to jab that extra bit in there.


That all aside, good review of the game and I can only hope more people pick it up!

I personally love how game updates don't always break the mods.
I use a handful of mods without them being up to date and they just work.
