Did You Know This in ALADDIN? #shorts

In a tale as old as time, or at least as old as Hollywood, we learn that even the biggest stars can have issues with the studio. In the case of Aladdin, Robin Williams had some very specific demands when he signed on to voice the Genie. He wanted to be paid the minimum legal amount, no merchandising with his voice, and only 25% of the poster space. When Disney didn't meet these demands, Williams felt betrayed and withdrew his support from the project. As a result, he missed out on being part of the sequel and TV show, and his name was left out of the "The Art of Aladdin" book. But wait, there's more! Disney tried to make amends by offering Williams a Picasso painting, but he was still too angry to accept it. It wasn't until the chairman was replaced that Williams was willing to forgive and forget. With a public apology and a new chairman, Williams was finally able to return as the Genie for the third film. And just to make sure everything was up to par, Disney tossed out all of the Genie's previous recordings with Dan Castellaneta and had Williams re-record everything from scratch.

Mad respect for Robin. He didn’t take any of that crap from Disney and wasn’t in it for the fame but for his own talent to be shown to the world.

A good man indeed, may he rest in peace.

Talk about artistic integrity on Williams end. He was having none of it, he just wanted to be treated like any other voice actor, rather than be used as a marketing ploy to get money out of more people just because "ooo big famous man is in the movie".

Though its exactly because of Disney's choices here to go for fame and money over integrity that so many animated movies now go for star power rather than talent, and why we have such odd things and misfits as Chris Pratt as Super Mario.

This is the first time I’ve heard this story with the spin that Williams had “demands” and that he “missed out” on being the voice in the series and that he was “allowed” to return for the 3rd movie.

They didn't sound like very unreasonable demands.

All he wanted was an apology not an expensive painting.

Well, Robert Williams can do all those things because he’s awesome and funny and he’s talented

I can't say there are many actors who would refuse money and want to be paid the minimum amount and be given minimum spotlight. Shows how amazing Robin Williams was. Taken too soon.

I love Robin Williams. However, isn't that a big slap in the face to Dan Castellenetta?

There was a sequel I thought this was one of those many single movie cartoons

And another fun fact, Robin was the first celebrity to be apart of an animated film.

No wonder he wouldn’t do Aladdin sequels until the third movie.

Williams' depression showing here. He's too humble and self-depreciating to want to be so featured...

Wait, this sounds like he wanted to NOT be a big focus. Like he wanted others to shine. And taking the minimum, THAT’S A BREAK FOR DISNEY

I just found out about the second film. You're telling me there's a third?!

Nah he didn’t miss out, Disney did. Money hungry corporations. That’s why the second one flopped compared to the first one
