I don't think I've ever seen a book like this before. This Calculus book was written over 100 years ago and is still amazing. I think this would be excellent for beginners, it's so readable!!

The book is Calculus Made Easy by Silvanus Thompson and Martin Gardner.

Imagine creating something so useful to people even 110 years later. That is a legacy.

I've always had a love-hate relationship with math. I know how important it is.
Without math there is no modern world. But when mathematicians write
textbooks, it's like they write them for other mathematicians, not for students.
It seems that they can take even a simple idea, and by the time they finish
explaining it, it will require the maximum amount of time for the student to
unravel what it is they are trying to say. It looks like this book takes the opposite
approach. I think it's best to get the concepts as easily and simply as possible,
and then later you can tighten up on the formalism.

After dropping out of calculus at least twice, I learned calculus from this book. Get it, read it, before you take a calculus course.

This is the prologue to the second edition and it has me hooked already:

"Considering how many fools can calculate, it is surprising that it
should be thought either a difficult or a tedious task for any other fool
to learn how to master the same tricks.
Some calculus-tricks are quite easy. Some are enormously difficult.
The fools who write the textbooks of advanced mathematics—and they
are mostly clever fools—seldom take the trouble to show you how easy
the easy calculations are. On the contrary, they seem to desire to
impress you with their tremendous cleverness by going about it in the
most difficult way.
Being myself a remarkably stupid fellow, I have had to unteach
myself the difficulties, and now beg to present to my fellow fools the
parts that are not hard. Master these thoroughly, and the rest will
follow. What one fool can do, another can."

I've ordered it based on his explanation of "Integral just means 'the whole'" alone. Those basic hows & whys are so important, but so overlooked by most books / teachers.

I taught myself Calculus using an early (pre-Gardner) edition of this marvelous book. I have passed it on to my grandchildren. I also taught myself Algebra using a book "Higher Algebra" authored by Hall & Knight, first printed in 1887. This is "hands-down" the best Algebra book I ever owned. It features entrance examination problems sourced from colleges at Oxford and Cambridge and the "Ipswich" military academy. Take a look!

I agree: a book a student studying calculus or (anyone interested in learning calculus) should read. I had a soft copy of this book, 'Calculus Made Easy' many years ago. Don't know if I still have it. But it is a good book to have along with a student's calculus textbook.

Most of the books fail to explain calculus or any other topic with simplicity. I looked at many books for calculus and Trigonometry but they weren't satisfactory. They just had problems and bad explanations. You also need certain amount of theoretical part to cover the basics and not just the problems. This books does so quite efficiently. Many people who study calculus from otherbooks don't even know the basics(like what's integration and differentiation) etc. You can tell that its a legendary book when it even tells how to read a derivate! I am going to get a copy of the book ASAP. Thanks for the recommendation!

Martin Gardener was also the writer of the famous "Mathematical Recreations" monthly column that ran in Scientific American for many years. He was the perfect choice for this new edition of Thompson's excellent book.

I am currently enjoying reading "Mathematics It's content, methods and meaning" three volumes bound as one. It is beautifully written (analysis portion at least). You may want to check it out, if you haven't.

Holy cow. As a college freshman that was placed in Calc 1, a book for calculus that I can just simply read like an interesting novel sounds soooo appealing. Definitely getting this and will supplement it with extra practice problems from my regular textbook.

I got this book when I was a kid, maybe 16. It was my entry into higher math and I learned calculus before I went to college. I tested out of calc-I so it saved me a semester's tuition.
Don't take this for a complete approach however.

The second edition of Thompson's book that I have has an Ancient Simian Proverb before the preface, which says:
What one fool can do, another can. :D
