They may no longer be in existence, but when they were, these were some of the most entertaining, sports organizations ever. Though the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL are household names today, these other extinct leagues at least provided some viable competition to the four major sports leagues back in the day.

Today we look at the top 10 defunct sports leagues of all time. And a big shoutout to “Car FYI Canada” for suggesting this video.

One way that the WHA tried to attract players was obviously higher salaries. The most notable one was when the Winnipeg Jets signed Bobby Hull. His contract was worth close to $2, 000, 000, with $1, 000, 000 of that alone being a signing bonus, which was unheard of for 1972.

The AFL teams just basically merged with the NFL and then they made the distinction "AFC" from the former AFL teams and "NFC" for original NFL teams. But the original did not include expansion teams such as the Texans and Panthers.

Minor league hockey at one point in time had competition between the IHL and the current existing AHL.
The IHL's championship trophy was called the Turner Cup. The notable teams I could recall is the Detroit Vipers, Utah Grizzlies, Manitoba Moose etc just to name a few.
Long story short the IHL later merged with the AHL and the AHL we know today is the minor league affiliate of the NHL.

Some of the info is incorrect. The AAFL lasted FOUR years, (1946-49), not 3, and the American Football League existed 10 years, not 9. The original Balt. Colts folded in the early 1950s.

The AAFC lasted for 4 years (1946-49), not three and the AFL lasted 10 years (1960-69), not nine. What about the World Football League, which played in 1974 and 75?

How about the World Football League? Many of their rules are in the NFL now such as overtime, goalposts on the end line, missed field goals come back to the original line of scrimmage and moving kickoffs back from the 40 yard line. Then the innovations like the Dicker rod and players wearing different pants according to their position

How about the original Major Indoor Soccer League? it presented the world game to an American audience like never before and several teams outdrew comparable NHL franchises.
