Learn the English Phrases TO STEAL THE SHOW and TO SHOW OFF
Показать описание
Read along to practice your English and to learn the English phrases TO STEAL THE SHOW and TO SHOW OFF
In this English lesson, I wanted to help you learn the English phrase, to steal the show. If someone steals the show, it means that they do something that makes you look at them, instead of the person you're supposed to be looking at, if you're watching a video or a show or a play or something like that. Here's a really good example. In my last English lesson, Oscar stole the show. Oscar was in the background and he was rolling around on the ground. And many of you in the comments said that you were watching Oscar, instead of listening to me and paying attention during the lesson. So sometimes when I make videos, I have to be careful because I don't want Oscar to steal the show. So again, to steal the show means, to draw your attention to a different person than the person that you're supposed to be watching or listening to. Oscar is around here somewhere. Maybe he'll come back and steal the show later.

The other phrase I wanted to teach you today is the phrase, to show off. And this goes along with the phrase, to steal the show, a little bit. When someone shows off, it means they do something so people will look at them. Sometimes young people, when they get their driver's license, they'll buy a really fancy car and they'll drive around and they'll take off really fast at a stoplight or they'll turn their music really loud in their car because they want to show off. They want people to look at them. Sometimes when someone is playing a sport like basketball, they do really fancy moves on the court because they want to show off a little bit. They want people to look at them while they do something that makes people want to look at them.
So to review. To steal the show, if you could imagine a play where there's a really famous actor, but then someone in a minor role in the play does such a good job that you're more interested in watching them, we would say that they are stealing the show. And when you show off, it means you do something so that people will look at you.
Let's look at a comment though, from a previous video. This comment is from Aleksey, and Aleksey says, "Thanks, Bob. Experience shows that if you don't eat chips and ice cream after supper, your face will become thinner but sadder." And this is paraphrased quote. This is a paraphrased quote from a famous Russian actress. "Enjoy your meal, everyone." And my response was, "I like that thought. I think food makes people happy, especially in the winter. I find it easier to eat healthy food in the summer because we have a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables available to us."
So thanks, Aleksey, for that comment. That was a good comment, and I do agree with that. I think that the less food you eat after supper, it probably will make your face thinner and you probably will look a little sad. I do like food. That's kind of why I agree with that. But right now, I'm trying to exercise every day and make it a point to eat healthier every day. Because I feel like winter has allowed me to put on a few pounds and I need to get back in shape because we will be farming again soon. And what I mentioned earlier about, in the summer, it's easier for us to eat fresh fruits and vegetables because there are more available to us.
In this part of Ontario, Canada, we do actually grow fruit. We can buy apples and peaches and pears and plums and nectarines in season, of course. That means the time of year when they are ripe. So that's a great time of year for me because I eat a lot, a lot of healthy food throughout the summer. And we also, of course, grow all of the common vegetables in this area, but certainly not right now, of course. right now, there is no one growing anything but believe it or not, in our basement, Jen is starting all little plants from seeds, and in a few months, we will actually have flowers in the field and we will be harvesting them again.
Anyways, have a good day. I'll see you tomorrow with another short English lesson.
