To start the procedure, eggs are taken from the female partner and sperms are extracted from the semen sample given by the male partner. Fertilisation of the egg and sperm takes place in the lab under the supervision of an embryologist. The fertilised egg is known as an embryo. The embryo is cultured in an incubator in the lab and its progress is monitored. After a few days the embryo is transferred to the female partner’s uterus in a simple procedure known as embryo transfer. The embryo attaches itself to the wall of the uterus and begins to grow into a baby.
