Going to a cafe or store, we usually have an idea of what we’re going to buy there. However, we often make purchases on a whim that we can’t later explain even to ourselves. Have you ever been in a situation like this? Have you ever spent much more than you planned?

If so, watch these ingenious tricks advertisers use in hope to get all of your money at once. The last trick is totally unfair – we think it should be prohibited forever!

SUMMARY
- if you slightly changed the recipe, update their looks, and turn them into fancy muffins or cupcakes, the humble cake would gain a second wind.
- Price tricks. People have trouble parting with their money, and restaurants know that. That’s why they often don’t indicate the currency.
- Marketologists use this trick: they add a similar product with a higher price so that the initial one will seem cheap enough by comparison, and its sales will go up again.
- One more nice move is to create a legend that will follow the product, and it doesn’t matter if it even makes sense. Milky Way, for example, made a TV commercial in the early ’90s, showing the candy bar floating in a glass of milk.
- Merchandisers know we’re often too lazy to open up the plastic package and fetch just one bottle.
- We tend to associate a red price tag with a reduced cost, even though it’s not always the case: the price may remain the same, and the tag is just a bright piece of paper.
-
Have you ever wondered why people in chewing gum ads always take two pieces at a time? That’s a trick to make you think it’s the correct way to chew it. Meanwhile, you’ll use twice as many pieces during the same period of time, and manufacturers sell more.
- Someone came up with a genius idea to paint the devices’ handles the color of potato peel. People started accidentally throwing away the peelers with the skins, and sales went up again.
- Manufacturers always try to add some "weight" to their products. For instance, they inform you that there’s exotic flower essence contained in the shampoo.
- It turns out that goods for women and girls cost 7% more than similar products for men and boys, despite the only difference being their color.
-
Marketing experts often manipulate terms when writing descriptions for food products. For example, the famous potato chips Pringles are not really potato chips, with actual potato content being only 42%, which also explains their unnaturally perfect shape.

Toothpaste. They show you that you need to squeeze 'em till it fills the whole brush with paste. When in reality a half of it would do the same job on your teeth. It is done to empty your toothpaste tube make you buy more.

the reason why they say the last trick is unfair is because they want you to stay for the whole video

don't forget that advertisers also have the big bags of chips for you to buy only for you to find out that there are only about 75 to 50 precinct of the chips in there, if you think they add the " air" in the bag so they can stay fresh. that's true but you don't need that much air for them to stay fresh

We learned about things like this in one of my marketing classes. They have shown that if your toilet paper faces you in the bathroom you will use 20% more. So in commercials they always show the toilet paper that way so you think that's the right way to do it, in addition they will print patterns that go with the toilet paper but only if it is towards you to make you think that is the right way to position it. Marketers are brilliant honestly...

When you are planning to buy 1 shirt, employees will say “this shirt is so good for you, blah blah blah etc.” They will say something to make you attracted to the shirt and it turns out you bought 2 shirts, buying clothes not planned

Bright side (this channel) always saying "This last one is ridiculous!" or "Stick around for the middle one!" to ensure that you watch the video! (not a supermarket one but meh)

one of my favorite tricks when they put sauces and seasonings that are already on the shelf next to the seafood and mark the price up. Also when the economy size is actually a higher price per oz. than the regular size.

1. Always check the tops & bottoms of the item shelves. The stuff they want you to buy is always within easy reach
2. If the lights are brighter and the floor is freshly waxed/shiny, where do they get the $$ to pay for that?
3. The best deals are never advertised. Always try to remember what you paid the last time for a given item (or write it down)
4. Always check the size/volume vs price. Try to figure a price per a set size (ie: how much per cup or how much per 100 ml, how much per lb/kg) Is that still a good price?
5. Never settle on 1 store to shop in, or 1 brand is best. Always check out other stores and comparable brands/generic packages for similar products
6. Do your local dollar stores carry things you use in your home often? Sometimes they get things that don't sell from local stores (Maple French Toast bagels & Granola Crunch here...)
7. Never shop during the last 2 days of the month, nor the first 3 days. Think the stores don't know when the welfare/disability/assistance cheques come out? That's when prices are higher (yes I am Canadian)
8. Remember - containers cost too... Maybe a water filter or reusable bags costs more up front, but later on, plastic will cost to dispose and is damaging the enviro (who pays for that?)
9. Ever wonder why the healthiest & most often needed stuff is always at the edges of the store? Guess what you have to walk by & look at to get there?
10. If the exact item you want is out of stock, don't buy the next best at a higher price (this is a version of bait & switch). Ask a clerk if more is in the back or get a rain check... if neither is possible, check a close by competitor store
11. Always shop where competing stores are less than 2kms/1.5 miles apart, They will compete for your $$ on similar items. Use mobile apps that show you flyers/coupons before you plan your route
12. Always plan a short break/munchies/drink or restroom stop after every 2 stores. Never feel pressured when shopping, they know this and do use it against you

13. I never shop at big shopping malls. They pay too much rent for their spaces, so you pay too much for their products
