Last of Us 2 is controversial, but this hated masterpiece is actually a great example of perfect storytelling.

Imagine ND released a game called LTOU pt 2 where you play as a girl hunting down the man who murdered her father. You don't know who he is, all you have are clues as to where he might be. You go on a heart wrenching adventure across the country to track him down and when you finally reach him in Wyoming the player discovers it was Jole the entire time. Smash cut to TLOU pt3

Honestly I was so fueled by rage that I never sympathized with abby

It’s like if read dead redemption 2 made you play as micha for the epilogue. They shouldn’t force people to empathise with characters, it should come naturally

So she kills the guy who tried to save her, a stranger, as she was being overwhelmed by the infected, because this guy killed her father to prevent her father from murdering a little girl... And I'm supposed to feel for her? Wtf

That’s the exact reason why we didn’t relate to Abby or at least to the extent that Neil and naughty dog wanted us too. We couldn’t relate to her or feel empathy due to us developing negative feeling for her before any positive trait to PROPERLY fill in. Yes we did play as Abby for a little bit before the golfing tournament but there wasn’t much there to have us gain little to any form of emotions towards her.

The biggest problem is whether or not you gain empathy for Abby. If you didn't the ending was terrible for you, if you did, you were fine. With me I didn't have any empathy for her. Although I might be in a minority believing that Joel made the right decision saving Ellie.

Exactly it FORCES empathy for Abby. I played as her and STILL hated her so when the final showdown happens and nothing happens it felt like an enormous waste of time. The gameplay loop got old, the characters weren't fleshed out and the way the game holds your hand and tells you which emotions to feel and when, is what makes the game a narrative failure in my eyes.

He's so wrong. Telling us that we learned to empathize with Abby and that when Abby and Ellie had their final battle we didn't want either of them to win. First off, I never empathized with Abby. I hated her and had to speedrun the part of the game where they forced me to play as her. And in the final battle I wanted Ellie to kill Abby. And her not killing Abby made me hate the game. This guy needs to speak for himself because he is completely wrong.

No, we actually don’t empathize with the murderous Abby and do want Ellie to win!

I don't think it was executed well

Nah, I wanted to kill abby. It's only cuz of the game story and they forced me not to kill her

This is such a galaxy brain take. They pay you to write this?

My only problem with TLOU 2 is the ending. It would have been perfect had the game let the player decide to kill or walk away. Not make that decision for us. That way players who want revenge can get it, and players who want peace can get it.

Nobody empathised with Abby. People hate it because we didn't get the choice to kill her

To be honest I didn’t hate Abby because I didn’t even buy the game because of the leak where she killed Joel

Okay, by trying to get us to empathize with both characters, they are sending the wrong message about revenge. Revenge brings us nothing, but more losts and sufferings. Ellie lost everything even her fingers (the only memory she had left of Joel). However, Abby got to keep the only person she cares most with her. Plus, it doesn't seem right when Abby started her revenge first. I don't hate it when they kill Joel nor do I hate playing as Abby. However, the story feels off man. The exhaustion and rage are there in the game though I can tell u that.

I never felt any reason to empathize with Abby. When I played as her, her missions and segments felt very directionless and Abby kinda just went along with everything. It felt very artificial and forced

I’m pretty sure everyone wanted Abby to die in the end
