You need the ball mounted in the engine bay ahead of time.

might work in coordination with a fire blanket. AKA need to keep the chemicals at fire area... Also part of the ball might work by the fast pop of the ball pushing oxygen out of area momentarily (like jet engines do at an oil well fire). With a fire blanket wisely oxygen will get shoved out quick.. but slower to return. With that burned out hood... oxygen is replaced nearly immediately.
