Making a ferrocerium rod spark for fire making is not hard, but it does require some practice. Here are some tips to help you be more successful in this survival fire making method.

And we would really appreciate it if you would check out my book: "Bushcraft Basics: A Common Sense Wilderness Survival Handbook." It is available on Amazon, at Barnes and Noble and your local independent bookstore.

What makes some ferrocerium rods better than others? Do some provide a hotter spark? And are some actually made of slightly different materials? Great video--- thanks!

The composition of the rod will determine how hot it sparks. Price can be one indication - generally the cheaper it is, the worse it will work. I've found Coughlan's are inferior and many of the rods "Made in China" don't spark all that well. Look on the back of the package - some of them will tell how hot the sparks will be.
I would trust a Boy Scout Hot Spark, and the custom ferro rods from the SurvivalCommonSense store. Otherwise, buy one, try it out, and then practice.
