The Mr Whippy ice cream brand was first sold in 1959 by the Forte Group1. A few comments about food items:
When I used to dash back and forth "across the pond" mostly on British Airways, but sometimes on United and others, the butter that was laid on from the catering truck (at least Westbound) was, I think, Cornish butter, and it was just fine, since it was... butter.
I have had Mr. Whippy some years ago, and I thought it was also fine.
The only soft ice cream known to most Americans is Dairy Queen. It's OK, but I've had better products. Dairy Queen only sells through roadside stands and storefronts, no ice cream trucks. Most people here, in cities at least, will remember "Mr. Softee" which is, I guess, the counterpart of Mr. Whippy, and it's also OK and does use trucks. The recorded theme song played from the rooftop speakers is so annoying that it's been banned in several areas. What's available here in the Northeast, and perhaps unknown in much of the country is Carvel. That's the best soft ice cream I've ever had. They're not nearly as ubiquitous as they used to be. The Greek-born founder (née Karvelas) used to make his own VERY quirky television commercials that everyone in my age group must surely remember... but they were very effective, and I wish I could remember on which day of the week the "Fudgie the Whale" ice cream cake special always took place.
