People argue whether the "canon events" are mandatory or not, but you can understand why so many Spidermen would WANT them to be. After losing someone important to you, being told that there was literally no way to prevent it because it was "canon" would help you escape a lot of the guilt.
But of course, this ALSO means you'd be quick to shut down anyone who argued the events WEREN'T mandatory. Imagine going through all that suffering, only to learn that it COULD have been prevented after all? Or even worse, that you sat by and let other Spiders suffer when you could've intervened, all because you thought you had to?
