Kushiro is the only big city on the Pacific side of Hokkaido. It’s a unique city, looks and feels different than others in Japan. As we walk from Kushiro Station to the Ocean, what do you think?

Thank you so much for making this livestream John. I felt a small sense of a connection to Hokkaido as mentioned on the live chat because my mother was born and raised there. I wasn't able to come here on my fist trip to Japan but I am making it my mission to stop here and experience all of Hokkaido in remembrance of my mom.

Kushiro is an interesting city, I especially like the retro street lamps and the nature scenes they put on the back of the road signs. And, as always, it’s good to see the orange jacket back in action.

Thanks John for putting up with the rain to film this! Hokkaido is a truly unique region within Japan. I'm looking forward to traveling there eventually to do a roadtrip.

A black R34 casually going across (23:38) and nobody say anything, that's truly only in Japan.

I love cities of this size. Big enough to have a reasonable selection of amenities and small enough that it’s possible to explore in a brief period of time.

Thank you for the look at Kushiro, it's nice to get a gander at a more rustic place.

Great walking tour, John! Loved our stay in Kushiro in ‘19. You have to get to the fish market and try the katte don. There’s some great Izakaya’s there and a Michelin awarded tempura restaurant that’s been in business over 100 years.

Hi John, I'm sorry I keep missing so many of your livestreams! My day job's been a bear, and my volunteer work's also been crazy busy (now that Japan's opening up, the Denver Takayama Sister City Committee is starting to plan trips to Japan, though I won't be going until next spring, probably!). I'm enjoying your Kushiro stream and I may be able to stay up for your Nemuro trip. BTW, need to tell you that those aren't geese everywhere in Kushiro -- they're cranes, as in "tsuru." Kushiro and those marshes north of the city are famous for them. Thanks, as always, for your dedication to keeping the rest of the world connected to Japan! BTW, I listed you as a food resource in my book coming out this fall, "Tabemasho! Let's Eat!"...

12:42 Thin traffic lights make a lot of sense since less snow would accumulate on them during winter seasons.

That big silver ball gave me the shivers. It reminded me of Phantasm. I did not expect to get the creeps from this episode. 😂

John, I notice that the detailed map of Kushiro is "upside down" in that North is at the bottom of the map and South is at the top. This seems to be common in Japan, and quite unlike the detailed maps I have seen in North and Central Americas, Europe, and Central Asia when I have visited there. Do you have any idea why the maps in Japan are flipped this way?

Thanks for the Kushiro livestream. The city looks like a interesting place to explore. ( Especially around dinner time😉.)
