CLIP DESCRIPTION:
August (Queen Latifah) recounts the inspirational tale of how the apiary chose the label for their honey.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Gina Prince-Bythewood's adaptation of Sue Monk Kidd's novel The Secret Life of Bees stars Dakota Fanning as Lily, a 14-year-old growing up in a small Southern town in 1964. She is haunted by memories of shooting her mother when she was a young girl. Lily lives with her emotionally distant father, and her best friend is their African-American housekeeper Rosaleen (Jennifer Hudson). After locals beat Rosaleen for attempting to register as a voter, and Lily's dad goes one step too far during an argument with his daughter, Lily and Rosaleen set out to find the place where the only picture Lily has of her mother was taken. That place turns out to be the home of the independent Boatwright sisters, a trio -- Queen Latifah, Sophie Okonedo, and Alicia Keys -- who make a very successful living producing honey. Lily and her friend move in with them, and soon the girl learns about both beekeeping and life.

I love the movie and novel so much ^_^ mothers and substitute mothers are such a big theme in it, and the Black Madonna story that August tells is so indicative of that. I can't remember if they mention it in the film but in the novel August mentions to Lily at one point that the statue of the Black Madonna is actually just the mast off an old ship, but if you see Mary in it, then it represents Mary to you. She also mentions "Everyone needs a God who looks like them." Even in Christianity, the Mother Goddess figure still finds a way to come through in one way or another ^_^ Just as Lily misses her own mother and found a mew mother figure in the Rosaleen and the Calendar Sisters, so too does humanity miss it's own Divine Mother figure and even the most patriarchal monotheisitic faiths still have some kind of Mother figure to substitute as Her. ^_^

I understand that I'm privileged to be born white. Sometimes I hate it though. It's not fair that two human beings of different skin tones are to be treated differently. It should never have been that way. We all bleed red inside. I'm ashamed of being a part of a majority that can be so cruel to anyone that looks 'different' to them. Despite the strength of those who are black, asian, mixed, and of so many colors, it is not enough to make up for the amount of despair, torture and pain they have felt. I know I have no real right to say anything, I am well aware that I have never experienced it firsthand. I am not saying this out of self-right, however. I say this because I want to help change the hearts of the world we live in, even if it's just one. Not for me, not to make a better name for white people, but to help assure that the future generations will help end this once and for all. The world may not be changed overnight, but the beginning is educating and trying to reach each other as one race. The human race.
