Seventeen seconds and I'm over it
Ready for the disconnect
Putting on a brave face
Trying not to listen
to the voices in the back of my head

(But it's alright now)
It's a distant memory baby
(It's alright now)
You know you should just let it go

But some feelings have a habit of persisting
even though you wouldn't let it show

Wearing me out
(All this)
Hanging around
(It just starts)
Getting me down
('till I'm just)
Looking for an easy way out

Braindead from boredom
I'm led to distraction
Scratching the surface of life
Nothing really happens
But it's easy to keep busy
When you tell yourself you're traveling right

(But it's alright now)
Was it really worth it baby?
(It's alright now)
Was it just a waste of time?

Keep on second-guessing
Use my memory like a weapon
On everything I try

Wearing me out
(All this)
Hanging around
(It just starts)
Getting me down
('till I'm just)
Looking for an easy way out

The moment he finishes saying, "Seventeen seconds and I'm over it, " it really is over 17 seconds.

This song is so short. It just breaks my heart.

I love how de Backer essentially wrote and produced the entire album himself, while everything else on the radio has about 40 writers and their uncredited ghost writers, a hundred producers, and and array or researchers and production consultants.

fuck that, all it takes is one person who knows what sounds they want and how to make them. that person is Wally de Backer, aka Gotye

The sudden ending fits with the theme of the "easy way out". Instead of having a complicated climax, it just ends. Brilliant.

This is totally a reference to Day Tripper by the Beatles, it even samples the sax from The Stones "Satisfaction"

The lyrics are actually just so genius

Somebody I used to know brought tears to my eyes the first time I heard it on the radio. Went and bought the record and still have it. Became a bit of a Kimbra fan after the song too. I'm a rock metal guy too, lol...

I think this is also why his album is perfect.
It's so creative and fresh.

I had a friend over for the past few days. I haven't seen them for a few years and they didn't want to do anything. At all. For four days. I was seriously looking for an easy way out... Thanks Gotye :) this song kept me sane through that torment

I think he knows his sound quite well. This is his third album. I like that he doesn't 'fit' into any mold. He's eclectic. :)

...Wow.

You know, while people keep saying how much they've connected to "Somebody That I Used To Know", I've never quite felt it. Don't get me wrong, it's an absolutely fantastic song, but I can't relate to it very well personally. This, on the other hand... Ouch.

Goyte, you're amazing, pure and simple.
