In this video, we're going to talk about the importance of vitamin D for your hair. In particular, I want to show you the connection between vitamin D deficiency and hair loss.

Right beneath your skin, you have follicles. These are like the roots of your hair. On the root area, you have sebaceous glands, which produce an oily, waxy substance that protects your hair.

Both the sebaceous glands and the follicles have vitamin D receptors.

There are various hair growth stages. One of these stages is called anagen—this is the new hair growth stage.

The anagen phase is dependent on vitamin D.

Your hair follicles are like small organs. Each is made up of 20 different cell types that regulate the growth of the hair. Hormones, immune cells, and proteins also play important roles in the hair growth process.

In cases of both alopecia and general hair loss in women, research has found that a mutation of the vitamin D receptors (VDR) could be the cause of the problem. This VDR mutation blocks your ability to absorb vitamin D into your hair follicles.

The key is to get more vitamin D. It's ideal to have at least 10,000 IUs of vitamin D daily.

Bile salts can also help improve your absorption of vitamin D.

Thanks for sharing this! After I lost most of my hair in the crown area (Fall 2020), I went to a dermatologist and was diagnosed with early scarring alopecia in Jan 2021. While trying to find natural solutions, I researched a ton of sources and I remember learning about Vitamin D (earlier in the pandemic), anti-inflammatory foods, etc. from Dr. Berg and a few other science based resources. I got a full blood workup and also had my Vitamin D levels checked and they were very low. I started taking Vitamin D, significantly increasing my intake of anti-inflammatory foods, eliminating dairy (lactose intolerant and major cause of inflammation for me), and within the past 6 months, my hair has grown back in my crown area. There is still a long way to go but I am convinced that there are many of us that can experience healing by nourishing our bodies from the inside out. I just started documenting my journey on my YouTube channel and plan to share all that I am learning and experiencing around this topic. Thanks, Dr. Berg!

This is so true. I was recently diagnosed with extremely low vitamin D and my hair began falling out.

you know, I started taking cod liver oil ( A, D, Omega ) after watching one of Dr Berg videos about the hypothalamus gland and I kid you not after 3 days I could see results in my eyes and hair and skin. My vision cleared up and my hair don't come out in the comb and a random stranger in the grocery store came up to me and said "You have beautiful skin". Wow! Oh, and I started eating something green every day like okra, collard greens, kale, broccoli, cucumber, spinach, you get it.

I am a bald man and have been for 21 years or so. I've been sunbathing over the two years, just a few times a week, and I have noticed hair returning to former bald spots. Now it's not a lot and my hair isn't obviously growing back but my beard is thicker and fuzz replaces bald spots around my head. ☀ 🤗 Thanks for the video!

Totally works. I lost a lot of hair with Covid last year and I started researching immunology some. This doc from Iowa or Idaho did a presentation to his local government on how to reverse Covid easily. Anyway, part of it had to do with vitamin d so I started taking 10-12k every day. My hair EXPLODED in growth. It was a nice side effect!!

Omg I feel so seen. My family-just the women have this type of hair loss from some autoimmune disease. I started losing my hair in my early 20s. My doctor told me that my vitamin D was low and to take a supplement. I just happened to be taking 10, 000+ IU about 20, 000-40, 000 a day and my hair started growing back in the bald patches this is after dermatologist told my mom and sister their hair would never grow back. I’m sharing this with them so they think I’m less crazy. I was told my cholesterol was high at 19 but I found out later that the precursor to vitamin D is cholesterol and if it’s high in my blood then it’s not being converted. Vitamin D also acts like a hormone in the body and our family is pron to hormone issues.

When I went into menopause my hair started falling out - I was taking a range of supplements to help with the menopause, but it wasn’t until I started taking vitamin D that I also started to notice a thickening of my hair again.

I started talking a vitamin D supplement as a gel cap last year. Not sure how much right of the top of my head, but it was a crap ton of it. I was not sick all winter, and my mood was better (according to my wife). Vit D is my new favorite pre-cursor.

Dear Dr Berg, I am Brigid from Australia, and about 1&1/2 weeks ago I greatly increased my vitamin D, and I can’t believe the difference in my mood!!! I’m also wondering ( I know it’s very early days yet) if it’s affecting my hair already? The shift in my mood is a lifesaver! Anyway, I love your video’s, so please keep them coming!!! God bless, and Namaste! From Aus!

This makes sense. When I started supplementing vitamin D, I noticed the hair in my shower drain went basically to zero since then.
