The QUEEN of Soul could do it all music-wise… This song is PROOF ✊️👑

You guys have to watch the live version from the Grammy’s. They asked her to sing about 30 minutes before hand, the original singer got sick and she had to step in. She was great!

This is an Opera Song sung Aretha STYLE! :-D She is her talent, ergo she does/did what needed to be done and she nailed it.

She took opera lessons and learned Nessun Dorma to sing at Pavarotti’s birthday party. Then he was supposed to sing it at the 1998 Grammy awards and accept a legend award but got sick. Aretha stepped in and sang it for him. It was shocking as I didn’t know she could sing opera and it was pre-internet days, so few of us knew. I sat right in front of the tv and was full-on crying by the end. Everyone was talking about it in the days after. Just incredible. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼💗💜💗

This was truly a remarkable performance. And for her to stand in for Pavarotti with little time to rehearse makes it even more remarkable. Aretha Franklin was an amazing talent. Nessun dorma is an aria from Puccini's opera Turandot. The language is Italian and is sung with great passion. However, the translation isn't very cheerful. "None shall sleep, None shall sleep! Even you, oh Princess, In your cold room, Watch the stars, That tremble with love and with hope..."
So it's kinda dark. However it is beautiful to hear.

Beautiful she can do no wrong. I love how she goes from Italian to English. Great reaction ❤

She definitely put her own spin on it. It's fascinating to hear the difference between the way Aretha sings it and the way an opera singer would. Different placement of the voice, different area of resonance. It's really interesting.

Hey, memory lane! I used to go see The Nutcracker every year because our school would take us as an outing. Years later, I got to see Baryshnikov dance it, when he was in his first glow of Western stardom. * sigh * He was so beautiful...

I love how Aretha did this song “her way” and it’s wonderful. Two of the Home Free boys try this the “opera” way. It’s on Austin Browns channel “Two Country Singers Try To Sing Opera”. Jaw dropping!

Pavarotti himself asked her to replace him at that night. They were (became) great pals!

Aretha was a last minute fill in for Pavarotti due to him getting sick to perform at this awa5lrd show. She had couple of hours to learn this aria, and it brought down the house. It's a shame you didn't watch the video.

She sang it for Pavarotti live at the grammys...it was awesome, that version!

Wish you had reacted to her singing this song at the 1998 Grammy Awards. Pavarotti was sick and couldn't sing. He knew she could do it because he had seen her do it at another concert.

This is my absolute #1 favorite rendition of this song. I have heard all the regular opera singers - they all do it really well, but she is the only one that makes me tear up at the end. I don’t know why. It just hits something just perfect.
She was perfect. It was kismet that she came in and was needed to stand in for Luciano that day.

I've been listening to Aretha since she released her first record. I've never heard her sing anything but RandB. She did this very well. If you are interested in more classical music, there is a young man 28, in England who has been heralded as the next Pavarotti, his name is Jonathon Antoine. You might try his version of Nessun Dorma, or from La Miserable the song Empty Chairs at Empty Tables, or the song from the GodFather, Parla Piu Piano. Nessun Dorma is Italian Nessun means nobody and Dorma means sleep. The Nessumn Dorma translates to nobody sleeps from the opera Turandot, . Here are the translated lyrics in english:

None shall sleep,
None shall sleep!
Even you, oh Princess,
In your cold room,
Watch the stars,
That tremble with love
And with hope.
But my secret is hidden within me,
My name no one shall know,
No... no...
On your mouth, I will tell it,
When the light shines.
And my kiss will dissolve the silence that makes you mine!
(No one will know his name and we must, alas, die.)
Vanish, o night!
Set, stars! Set, stars!
At dawn, I will win!
I will win!
I will win!
