Can the Washington Huskies Bounce Back After the Apple Cup?

Jedd Fisch and the Washington Huskies have faced a lot of scrutiny after a lackluster Apple Cup performance. Was it just a blip, or are there deeper issues at play?

Join the discussion as Locked On Huskies hosts Roman Tomashoff and Lars Hanson explore the Huskies' offensive identity under Fisch, who described his offensive identity as a balanced attack as he aims for 300 passing yards and 200 rushing yards per game. Freshman quarterback Demond Williams Jr. is in the spotlight, with questions about his future playing time as senior Will Rogers continues to play very well. The offensive line's ability to support a more aggressive passing game is also under the microscope. Penalties remain a significant concern, with the team ranking near the bottom nationally in penalty yards.

Don't miss this engaging analysis of the Washington Huskies' challenges and potential strategies for improvement. Listen now for unique insights into the team's path forward.

Was the Apple Cup a bad omen for 2024, or a fluke?

That press conference today with the coordinators really rubbed me the wrong way. The way they don’t answer questions and don’t take active responsibility really reminds me of the people in charge during the dark days…

I came away with the feeling that the coaching staff didn’t take this game to seriously. We’ve even heard afterwards that “the pre-season is over now and we’re going to conference play” which further proves that we treated WSU like Weber State. There was a fundamental disconnect between the fan base and the new coaching staff. Hopefully with all this blowback, they take WSU more seriously next year

Lars, WHEN did Jedd previously have a game THIS bad??

If, like you said, it happens once a year, then that’s a trend.

The problem is the penalties. You can't win with an average of 10 per game. Consider how many yards that was. And penalties are a coaching problem.

That qb pitch option at the end of game was a horrible call wasnt even close. WSU was reading that all the way.

With all of the turnover in personnel and staff this is a rebuild year. It wasn’t that long ago that the UW didn’t have a single Qb on scholarship. WSU and OSU are still collecting the old PAC earnings so one may joke that we got beat by a G6 team that isn’t really true yet. I don’t think we are going to see the ramifications of relegation for a few years. It will be the case in years to come. Time is needed to firm up the lines and build quality depth. The Coaching staff hasn’t even had a full year here yet.

As a person who played football, there’s some truth to what Jedd said. Sure, that play would’ve needed perfect execution, and definitely should’ve given Jonah the ball sooner in the play, to have a chance, but there were blocks to be made. And this idea that Jedd shouldn’t call plays is a cope.

I just look at it, as the Huskies played their worst game and the Cougars played their best game, really that is all what happened. But our worst game was as horrible to watch. Because so much of it was horrible. But Fisch and Belichick they need to learn their guys better. That goal line stand was awful when you are Fisch and running a QB who is obviously not an option QB. You could have faked the option with oh here Demond, and WSU would have bit on it, and have Demond throw a fade to Giles or one of the tight ends. It was an easy a drop in the hat TD. It looked a lot like when Pete Carrol threw a pass, and it was intercepted in the Super Bowl when you had Marshawn Lynch running down the Patriots all game. Our defense giving up a what running here touchdown on 3 and 20 vs John Mateer. That was beyond horrible defense. The whole game was like that. With 100 penalties it felt like that gave WSU an advantage after advantage. It sucked to watch. Totally as hurt. Hopefully they figure out what they want to run with one yard to go, near the end zone. It is not too here difficult. The creativity was nil in this game. I was bored. Better coaching coming?

It was the wrong call Period..Let's move on I'm sure Coach has..They just gotta play better as a team going forward and I think they will.

Washington very rarely loses two games in a row. If they come out on Saturday evening at home and lose very badly to what is essentially an inferior opponent in Northwestern, then we have a problem however, I do think that the coaching staff did not take the apple cup as seriously as an alumni as myself does. Let’s see how he coaches in the Big Ten conference games first.

Coach Don James would Bring the other Qb in And give him a series in the 2nt Qb that I understand. But this bringing the kid in here and there messed up the momentum on the Drive.

The huskies seem to be another team that can move the ball between the 20 yard lines but struggle in the red zone. Congratulations on keeping WSU under 30 points.

People need to realistically look at this roster and the turnover from last year everyone is playing together for the 1st time. This year is not going to be pretty at first they will have growing pains the coach is still trying to figure out what players do what in a GA e situation. So on Saturday, the whole team from the coaches down played the worst game fans have seen in a long time after we were spoiled last. I am excited to see the coach build a powerhouse team just look at what he was able to do in recruiting his first year. The team he has now isn't what he will have next year. I surmise like anything you're trying to build you're going to make mistakes but all you have to do is look at his coaching record he is a winner and that's good enough for me. Just look at what Deboer did to this school it will take a few recruiting cycles to recover from the disaster the Deboer left Jedd! But I'd part of the excitement is watching a team grow and get better every game. The game against the Cougars was a fluke. As bad as they played they still should have won the game. So what does that say about how bad the Cougars are? Ps don't you think the referee was calling the game one way? Please explain how a sideline official 30 yards downfield can see the line of scrimmage from so far back. You notice how he called a penaltys when the cougars needs a first down, AND why was one ref calling all the penalties?

3 games into a new regime, most of last years 2nd place team having moved on to the NFL or transfer portal, geesh guys, cool out. I'm not sweating the load at this point as the players and coaches need to develop cohesion in their own way. Be concerned if we were 1-2 or 0-3.

Huskies are coached well they had ton of chances to win the game and came up short. Excited by Steve play calling on defense.

Get control of the 25 yd personal fouls and we win. Everything else was fine. Take away the personal fouls and we’re talking about 3-0
