you missed one fact in story: Taiwan and Mainland both were part of China when civil war started b/w Communism party and Jiang-Kaishek's national party. So separation (b/w Mainland China and Taiwan) is the leftover from unfinished China civil war.

Taiwan is the remnants of the Kuomintang government that ruled the mainland from 1927 to 1949 when the People's republic of china under map Zedong took power making the government flee to Taiwan

You forgot to the mention the First Sino Japanese war, a war when Japan took Taiwan from China in the 19th century.

in 1972, the US also confirmed the 'one China policy' which means there is only one China which includes Taiwan, China does not want to invade Taiwan but see Taiwan rejoining the mainland in the next few years, peacefully. It's only the US that seem to have changed their own policy.

Major correction, American foreign policy mostly pressured the nationalists NOT to attack the mainland or at least to “delay” it (for political/ideological reasons the dream of “taking back the mainland” was maintained by the KMT as long as Chiang Kai Chek lived.
