Tom compares the 2021 Fortuner and Pajero Sport and provides an expert opinion.

So you want an off-road 4WD wagon but you don’t want to pay for a Land Cruiser or Patrol. Okay, so should you buy the new Toyota Fortuner with the boosted 2.8-litre diesel, or the much cheaper Mitsubishi Pajero Sport with the 2.4-litre? Is the Fortuner GXL really worth $10K more than the Pajero Sport GLS? We’re going to take a close look and find out what the best 4x4 wagon is in 2021.

In today’s view, Tom Baker from Chasing Cars conducts a comparison review of the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport and the updated Toyota Fortuner, checking out their off-road ability, on-road manners and interior packaging.

What would you buy? These? Something else entirely? A Ford Everest or Isuzu MU-X? Let me know below in the comments.

I have been a Mitsubishi user for years. My last car was the Lancer. 19 years never missed a beat. Now I own a Montero Sport 2012. I have been driving it 9 years. 3 deep flood crossings and so far I only replaced brake pads and a belt. I will once again buy myself a Gen 3 Montero because of performance and reliability.

I was going to go the MU-X but once I took the Pajero Sport for a drive I was sold, been a Toyota guy for ages but very disappointed in my local Toyota service and support, Toyota sales were not interested in selling either. My new PS will arrive mid October, very excited.

The Pajero all day any day. More car like. Handles well. Good fuel consumption. Very comfortable. All this and $10k cheaper. It’s a no brainer!

I would absolutely choose the Pajero Sport. It's hard to beat the value of Mitsubishi right now. For similar spec'd vehicles, it is not unusual to see at least a $10K price difference with a lot of their models. I've just bought a new Outlander LS 2WD Petrol and while the CVT transmission isn't perfect, it is a great family bus. Well done Mitsubishi!

Bought pajero sport glx last year with 7yr warranty; couple of free services; roadside assistance; and towbar fitted for $42990 driveaway. Yes it was a current 2019 with adaptive crusie etc etc ... Nothing comes close for value and I love it.

A good review, although I think you should have delved into the 4wd systems. I think the super select 11 system of the Pajero Sport allows full time 4wd, which is a safety bonus.

I just saw this and I'm nearly a 12mth owner of a Mitsi PJS in GLX guise. On road for me was @55K with tow bar, bull bar, roof bars, window tint and dash cams. Really good value. The reason for this was this was and is I believe the only 5 seat version available. The only major items I missed getting in this spec are the auto tail gate, a Locking rear diff and the option of leather. None of these matter to me. KId's have flown the coupe. It still has all the same safety goodies. On and Off road it has to this point been an awesome vehicle, even without the rear diff lock and yes, the Superselect transmission with the option of AWD on the tarmac for those wet days is a big plus. So far I'm loving the experience.😎

Good review. I have always wanted to see how the Pajero stacks up. The Mitsu is obviously the better buy. However, I have never liked the style of this current model. The rear end just looks too awkward and not cool. Resembles a Ssangyong style trend.

Driven a Pajero sport when I was visiting Melbourne a few years back...was impressed with it then and still do. Too bad at my part of the world now, they don’t have the Pajero sport for sale though...:(

I looked at both models as I was looking to purchase a new vehicle, I chose the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport. I have always bought Toyotas before but was disappointed with several aspects of the Fortuner. The side storage of the third row seat took up a lot of storage area and obstructed, the views out of the rear section. the third row in the Pajero folds down flat which is much more convenient and doesn't obstruct any line of sight. The Pajero Sport can be put in 4 wheel drive mode while on paved road when the conditions such as mud, rain and flooding makes its way on the road. I live in the country so this is very important. The tech in the Pajero Sport is much better overall than the Fortuner, this is both a positive and a negative as there is the possibility of having more electronics go wrong, but in this automotive day and age this may be a reality regardless of what new vehicle you own. I really hope that the next model of the Fortuner addresses these issues, but I am just one consumer and my concerns may not be the pathway for the Fortuner in the future but one can hope.

Btw, I have both 😉
For long distance, fortuner feels better than Pajero Sport (for driving experience, 1st row passenger, as well as 2md row passengers)
The fuel consumption also Fortuner has a better milleage.

Great review, I am looking at both vehicles as well as the Isuzu MUX. I think this review may have just swayed me towards the Pajero, the $10 -15K price difference is a big factor + now you get 10 years warranty!

having driven both I can say toyota is more smoother and quiter, but they are both great. I am a proud owner of Pajero Sport 2021 4x4 right now, just clocked 20000km.. Its so great so comfortable for my long journeys.

Mitsubishi PS has permanent AWD if you want it. Absolutely incredible advantage, especially where we live in Snow country. Reviews very seldom mention it. Same with the Triton. No one mentions this tremendous AWD capability.

I ordered my Mitsi on Sunday, My reasons were Comfort, Forward collision Mitigation, location of cruise controls on steering wheel, Adaptive cruise control, 8 speaker stereo system, twin electric adjustable front seats, no silly rear folding seats but roomy enough for a stayover night mattress, 8 inch digital dash, No DPF issues like Toyota, the layout of the dash controls, plenty USB sockets but the biggest reason was the super select II 4 wheel drive system with the all time 4x4 for sealed roads! The only thing I don't like is the tail lights....Sorry Toyota!

Have to say that this is one of the best car reviews I have seen in a long time. So much information about each car and comparisons between previous models as well. Very well done. Keep up the awesome work!
