Here is my Underhand VS. Overhand Foul shooting 30 day test to find out which one is better. I took 30 days and tried both Underhand and Overhand techniques, and was really surprised by the results!

Let me know what you think of the video! Would you ever give the underhand shooting technique a try, or would you rather stick with overhand shooting?

Always hear players say that they would do anything to help their team win except when it doesn't look cool.

The one thing I noticed about Rick Barry is the follow-through for the backspin, which makes your shot more like to go in if it hits the rim (makes your shot "luckier") -- It looks like you got more of that backspin and follow-through as you went along! Great video, thanks!

A friendly reminder that ball is life.

Tip: Make sure that the form on every shot you is exactly the same. That is key for becoming a consistent shooter. Your follow through often differed between shots.

My theory is that its better because of an improved aur curve trajectory... With the granny shot it enters the rim from the very top

I would strongly recommend people go listen to the Gladwell podcast this is in reference to. Title of the episode is The Big Man Can't Shoot. It talks about more than just free throw shooting. Even has a bit about the NFL draft that is interesting.

Good video!

Great video! It's nice to see the gains over time and the consistent advantage of underhand shooting.

I was a very good "pickup" ball player. I went by the Nickname "Butter". (yes, the original Butter, from the 70s). I used to shoot free-throws over hand and under hand. But, I used to use just one hand, in both styles. I was better than a 90% shooter. This comes because "we" typically shoot for sides. First two in are captains and get to choose teams from the next 4-6 people (half court) or next 8 people (full court). So, shooting became really important, to so practiced and perfected you freethrows just to be able to play at an early age. If push came to shove, and it was ALL on the line, IMHO, one handed, under hand, is the way to go. You can really stretch, and get close to the basket, almost like tossing paper balls into a wastebasket. I encourage everyone to try "underhanded, one hand" freethrows, or just one handed in general.

Interesting! Here's my two cents: In the long run overhand shooting is probably more beneficial because it translates better to the game overall. Sure it's nice to be able to make free throws with better accuracy. But how big part of the game is that really? Getting better at throwing overhand shots will most likely help you score more points over the course of an entire game.

But i'm not even a basketball player tho

Hal Greer shot 81% well 6% above league avg from the line on jump shooting . But I wouldnt advise that either. Too much motion. Routine, least moving parts rule, relaxation concentration and confidence . Try it one handed levers aligned ankle, knee, shoulder, elbow, wrist splitting rim with foot of shooting side and dont look at the ball, bend at the waist feel the seams, look at the rim front or back ( doesnt matter much) 2 and a half rotations of back spin. So if your long you get the roll back. Persons with over large hands may try shooting with three fingers, pads on the ball, . Thumb index and middle. . Also do sprints before to get winded because fts are shot after cardio exertion . Composure is difficult after coming to rest. Finally move to the line directly from the back of key circle before alignment instead of sideways from ft line extended that gives you your first direct view of the goal not a sideways glance this helps your stereovision . There was a reason hank luisetti and jumping joe fulks pretty much ended the two hand set shot era . They shot a higher percentage one handed. But if you insist on comfort in 2 hands or have small hands try it bunny Levitt's way. Otherwise ...

i think for playears do not worth changing . cause overhand is something they use on the game so training free throws and playing have overlap training they can be better at both. underhand is to easy too lose the ball on the game.
