Some of THE BEST RUNNERS in California come from the Central Valley. When I ran cross country in high school there was this guy from Merced who could run all day. There was this other kid named Rich Kimble who, in one track meet, ran an 8:49 Two Mile and a 4:02 Mile. The guy also came from Sacramento, which is considered part of the Central Valley. Something about the flatness of the locale. In fact, two of America’s premier runners a number of years ago were Jim Ryan and Craig Virgin. Ryan came from Kansas and Virgin was from Illinois, areas that are pretty much devoid of mountains and hills unlike the Bay Area and other parts of California.
