While in one of my MBA accounting classes, we had a student show some of his homework to his dad who was a full time accountant and he said NONE of the stuff we were covering was actually performed in the real world

The economics professor love theory. I had to show one how they were off when it came to reducing employees pay.

You can pretty much apply this to any field. IT, psychology, medical to a point.

It’s called the gap between theory and practice.

It’s the same thing for accounting.
College courses: you need to be able to calculate the various financial statements by hand
Real life: excel is life

If they taught Austrian Economics in addition to Keynesian economics, people would have a more sound understanding on the topic. I went to business school and didn’t get macro or really understand the monetary system. Years after graduating, I started studying Austrian Economics and things started to click for me. Would have been better off just reading instead of going to university.

It's like 50 cent says "If the teacher would be any good at making money he wouldn't be wasting time teaching you that, he would hustle to get paid instead!" So that's what you get !

Same thing for almost every subject taught in universities. You pay thousands of dollars to be taught theory and the hit the workforce realizing you need to learn everything on the job

Myself being a finance student, can vouch for him on this. Things that you are taught during your classes have low applicability to real life as they use stipulations that do not apply to the real market and thus when you get into the real market, you realize when you calculate equations that you were calculating with constants are not actually constant in the real world

Those who can't do, teach.

Post-secondary education should not be considered on the job training. Especially if your teacher is an old fogey who's been out of the industry for 30 years and is resting comfortabley on his tenured laurels.

This is a problem all throughout education

Economics teach you about economics, not finance. Pretty clear

Same with advertising. You get the bade but the actual job is taught on the job.

When I was in a business class I was baffled how little the professors knew about running a business. My dad is a multiple times over entrepreneur, made fortunes, lost fortunes, and made them up again. Through and through risk taker business owner. I've been his right hand for over a decade helping him with management, proofreading loan applications, going to the bank for extensions, deposits, and license/permit applications. All the professors talked about was the theoretical and emotional side of a business but zero real world application. It was embarrassing and I'd call my dad and wed laugh about these "business concepts".

The first thing they teach you how to do in business school is how to file for the first thing they teach you how to do in business school is how to file bankruptcy if that doesn't teach you how shity the the secondary education program in this country is

Same in SW engineering - my curriculum at uni in the early 00's was things from the 1970's and 80's and it was pure coding/math. Nothing about how to actually deliver software products.
