Only she didn't age since having it, so if it was being passed down that person willingly died like her. She knew her son wanted to explore yet he didn't get the heart try, which he would have gotten before trying to leave the island most likely. We don't know how long they went to the island they are currently from though, but 15 chiefs so a while possibly unless they traveled and returned like Moana.

Or maybe because talas husband died when he was out on the sea and the only thing that came back was his boat and tala was scared or didnt have enough strength to do it after finding out that her husband died u can see this at the bottom when u press on the movie moana and go to extras its called education of moana

My own theory: maybe tala was chosen by the ocean because she saved a manta ray just like moana saving a turtle and tala's spirit animal is a manta ray even when she died she became one and i think if ever moana dies she will become a spiritual turtle

Actually the ocean gave the heart to moana when she was a baby after she saved that turtle but she accidentally dropped it and later tala must have found the heart because then she had it i mean moana had it for a second when she was a baby then tala had it
