As a child, she experienced heartache with the death of her mother on the eve of her teenage years. She endured a number of strict but life-saving years in boarding school–though she came out of them with bulimia, a condition she battled for decades.
Three marriages and three divorces, the guilt of not spending enough time with her children, and some misunderstood antiwar activism all led her to regret her choices in life. Her brother, the celebrated actor Peter Fonda (of Easy Rider fame) died in 2019. The siblings didn’t spend as much time together as Jane Fonda would have liked.
Fonda was diagnosed with osteoporosis and has also battled cancer. She has a double mastectomy in 2016, right before attending the Golden Globe Awards as a Best Actress Nominee, and is troubled by skin cancer.
Despite all the tragedy, Jane Fonda has much to celebrate. She started acting again in the early 2010s, landing award-nominated roles in big-budget movies. And now in her 80s (an age she never thought she’d reach), she’s a proud feminist, a vocal climate activist, and embracing the single life.
