Did You Know You Could...? Series: Did you know you could train neural networks to model tasks by animals?

Abstract:

Work in cognitive psychology has developed computational models for how people learn, remember, perceive and decide...that is, how people think. These models are constrained by behavioral data. More recently, progress has been made in implementing these cognitive models as neural networks. These models can be constrained not only by behavioral data but also by predictions about how neurons in the brain behave. Work in both cognitive psychology and neuroscience has converged on a particular form of scale-invariant temporal memory. I review this work and show recent progress in integrating this temporal memory into deep neural networks. Deep networks trained using this form of memory can learn problems at many temporal scales and generalize to out-of-sample data that is a temporal rescaling of training examples.
