[SOUND ON] Hear the sounds of a white-handed gibbon "singing" in Kuantan, Malaysia!

Scientists use passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) to study the presence of gibbons in different areas. They use individual- or pair-specific acoustic signatures—vocalizations that have unique and consistent patterns—to monitor populations and calling behaviors. One way they are using this information is to determine where to place canopy bridges—or road crossings specifically designed for arboreal species like gibbons.
