Sir Elton John. What is there to say. The man was addicted to everything, smoke and drank everything imaginable. Has been sober for 30+ years and helped get Eminem sober and is his sponsor. Not only did he have great music pre sobriety, but he went on to make stuff like The Lion King while being sober.

Also Luke thank you for that little bit at the end. Have had multiple family members become addicted to substances and either died as an effect or are having a hard time getting clean. I wish they’d see more things like this even if they aren’t fans of rock and metal.

Alice Cooper isn't sober! By his own admission he went and traded one addiction for another, that addiction being GOLF! The man even gets to wear goofy clothes offstage too since he dresses in argyle socks with knickers like Payne Stewart used to do! In all seriousness, Alice is really a source of inspiration, as he has not only stayed sober for decades, but he has also stayed married to the same woman and can practice his Born Again Christian faith without being a jackass to others. Cool stuff!

Ivan Moody, hate him all you want, but the dude has been sober over 2 years now.
James Hetfield needs to be mentioned without a doubt for what he's overcome.
Dave Mustaine is a MUST, sober over 20 years after his 13th time in rehab

Stevie Ray Vaughan is another amazing story about recovery where he turned his life around and inspired to help others by attending sobriety meetings. Unfortunately it's bitter sweet considering he would die in a helicopter crash shorty after, but the one positive thing was he made the best for himself in the end.

I'm a sober musician. 14 years clan and sober. We never overcome the disease of alcoholism, we work at it on a daily basis.

With the stories surrounding Bowie, Cooper, and Iggy Pop about their drug use, it's amazing that we still have two of the three. Of those three can go on to leave happy, fruitful, sober lives, anyone can find their way to sobriety. Even if it's not a straight path, it can happen.

John Frusciante is definitely both a cautionary tale as well as an inspiring one, he almost died in a fire because of addiction, thankfully he did get help and afterwards rejoined RHCP and they did Californication, and since then has continued making great music and living his best life. Its a real tale of "the night is darkest before the dawn".

Along the lines of Nikki Sixx, Dave Mustaine also clinically died after an OD and was revived and is sober to this day. Even after a cancer scare, he is still out there kicking ass.🤟

18 months sober here. I still look to some of my sober musical heroes for inspiration and I still mourn the loss of my heroes who didn't make it. We all have different journeys through life and addiction, but the opportunity to get sober exists for all of us. Before I did it, I didn't think it was possible. Much like Nita Strauss, I considered drinking such an important part of my identity that I feared totally losing myself if I got sober. I didn't see a life for myself without alcohol.

But here I am, still alive, still myself and doing great ! So, if you're reading this and are struggling with addiction, I just want to say this: you were already someone before you started using and you will still be someone after you've stopped. Getting sober may seem impossible and I'm not saying it's gonna be easy, but it can be done. This video and my comment prove it.

Thank you Luke for this important video. As a sober musician, I can't begin to tell you how much I appreciate you doing this.

My dude Clint Lowery of Sevendust used to struggle bad with alcohol, nearly destroyed his life and his career.
An incident in Slovakia gave him a wake up call and he's been sober for I think over a decade.
Despite all the tragedy that's hit him in life, he turns it into beautiful painful melodies, and he's a genuinely inspiring person.

Elton John is another who's battled addiction and has since remained sober for 30 years. I still remember hearing a story that indicates either how many drugs he was on (or just how fast he was writing hits) by being shown the sheet music of "Candle in the Wind" and more or less responding "I don't remember writing this one."

Also, I've been getting into Eyehategod lately and their singer, Mike Williams got off opiates during Hurricane Katrina. After getting arrested, it seemed difficult, but he was able to and inspired his bandmate to kick his habit.

Devin Townsend. Went sober around the time his child was born back in 2006. Basically just an amazing musician and human being all around.

It's very important that we recognize and celebrate sobriety in every way. Mental health and sobriety is the most important thing right about now, especially in music.

One story that makes me teary eyed is one that Jerry Cantrell tells about jumping out a window into blackberry vines full of thorns. I don’t know if he is completely sober but his story illustrates what a hold addiction can have on someone.

It’s very inspiring to hear stories about rockers and metal musicians, or anyone really, cleaning up and beating their demons. Brings a lot of hope.
