Hi, Stuart!
I'd like to clarify a few points:

(1).
"I prefer doing..." or "I prefer to do.." means in general.
"I'd prefer to do.." means in a specific situation.
Question: is it true that we can't use "rather" in general, only "prefer"? Or may be "I rather stay at home." = "I prefer to stay at home." ?

(2).
How to use these constructions in past? Is it correct to say:
"I would have preferred to stay at home."
or
"I would have rather stayed at home.
?
