I tried this and my test light did not go off. I have a diesel truck with two batteries so I completely disconnected one battery then tried your method. But no success

A drain on a battery isn't a short, a short can drain a battery but it can blow a fuse, start a fire etc. I assume you don't mean a short to ground bu a parasitic drain.

1. Use a thermal imaging camera. I know they are pricey.

I don't get it? Aren't you just completing the circuit again? Battery cable off connect test light to cable, light to post completes circuit again.🤔
